First read this about a decade ago, in a single sitting. Robert Payne is perhaps my favourite of Ed Gorman's leading men - there's a wonderful sense of the hard-nosed, hard-boiled Chandler feel to the character, but he's so much beyond that, too. And there's a reason for that, Ed Gorman knows how people think, how they feel and how they react. He dips into fears and knows how to trigger them, and keep us on edge, doubting. You can't go wrong with Gorman.

I found this book to be an adequate read, but no special recognition. It's a time filler.

This book is a page turner. The action keeps going and the surprises keep coming. This murder mystery will keep you up at night to finish.

When a book is on a list of "Picked Just For You", I give the book some serious consideration. After I purchased and read this book, I need to reevaluate my position. I thought the characters were not very interesting, the storyline was weak and the editing was abysmal. I found spelling errors and plot shifts erratic. It almost read like a novice writer handing a mountain of manuscript to an editor and the editor begrudgingly cutting and pasting the story together. I wasted my money.

This book was pretty much the standard "Who dun lt" murder mystery novel. The author gave the story just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. I never really understood with whom the priest was having a tryst. I thought the actual murder could have been played up more. There certainly was enough characters in the plot of whom to suspect committed the murder. I thought Felice, (the girlfriend) was being totally insenitive towards Payne's feeling regarding Vic, the stepfather, who showed up totally unexpected on Payne's doorstep. Without knowing the history between Payne and Vic, and just knowing Vic no more than a few minutes, she was already taking Vic's side and even offering him a place to stay. She continued her support towards him regardless. This irrated me and made me dislike her character. This was a pretty standard read, even the revelation of the murderer came as no big shock. If you have nothing else to do and you want something to read this book will fill the need.
