Cultures clash and romance blooms in this tepid series opener set on Harmony, a cult-governed planet. The highest ranks of the Harmonic Empire have rewritten history to hide its origins and maintain the harsh caste-based social order that supports the rich and powerful while keeping the underclasses trapped in slavery. Harmony is also the only source of "Badger Metal," used to shield spaceships from the vagaries of radiation and hyperspace. The Confederated Star Systems desperately need the material for warships, and they send CSS Maj. Jake Hannigan undercover to Harmony to obtain the secret of making Badger Metal. His task is complicated by the social and political shakeup when Sissy, a pious young Worker caste woman, reveals a gift for prophecy and an amazing ability to quell earthquakes and storms by emotionally bonding with the planet itself. Historian Bentley's blend of mysticism, space opera and social commentary is too scattered and self-conscious to rise above its familiar themes. (Aug.)

But recently Harmony, run by a rigid seven-caste system buttressed by an alliance between religion and nobility, has begun to erode from within. When a young woman named Sissy appears from the worker class bearing the mark of all seven castes and demonstrating a unique empathic resonance with the seismically active planet, the reigning High Priest of the Crystal Temple moves swiftly to take advantage of her abilities, including her prophetic voice-but Sissy has her own world-shattering ideas. Bentley, who writes fantasy as Irene Radford ("Merlin's Descendants" series), launches a new series set in a universe where humans have grown apart from one another and where an alien grudge threatens the peace of all. Strong characters and a fully realized world make this a standout addition to most sf collections.

Meet the Author

C.F. Bentley was named for two grandmothers, giving her a living connection to the past. A museum trained historian, she has spent many hours prowling pioneer cemeteries deepening these connections. Raised in a military family, she grew up all over the United States. Her interests and reading range from ancient history, to spiritual meditations, to space stations, and a whole lot in between. Her Signal Corps brother has launched several communications satellites on the Shuttle. Watching those launches got her hooked on the ideal of humans reaching out into the universe.

    This stand alone space opera is exciting and filled with action

    Chaos is the operative word in outer space in the distant future. The Human Confederate Star System (CSS) is at war with the Marillon Empire, which controls numerous avian based inhabitants. Harmony and its colony plants have closed itself from the rest of the universe refusing to allow their orbs to be polluted. However the two confrontational empires will not allow the Harmony Empire to remain neutral because both hostile sides need Badger Metal only produced on Harmony that metal makes navigating and communicating much easier in hyperspace.------------- When a quake hits a Harmony factory, worker Sissy sings to the core of the planet to stop the tremors from reoccurring. She gives voice to the prophecy and comes to the attention of the High Priest Gregor, who seeks a new High Priestess since the incumbent just died in the quake. The people adore Sissy for the changes she is bringing to a world that thrives on status quo to a dangerous fault. Jake, a CSS agent, hopes to exploit her and steal the Badger Metal formula. Instead he finds himself in love risking his life and mission to protect Sissy from assassins who might be local traitors supporting the Maril he anticipates will soon invade. However, when Sissy learns the true history of her planet, she vows to break the strangling caste system in order to save her people by retuning to what the founders hoped for their future.------------------- This stand alone space opera is exciting and filled with action, but caste (pun intended) driven. Readers obtain a full spectrum of the political, economic, cultural and social engines that run the harmonic Empire. Sissy is the glue who holds the story line together as a lowly Worker caste becomes the Temple High Priestess she and readers learn on the job what she is supposed to perform and as important what to do regarding the future threat to and the ancient history of the planet. A bright star in the outer space galaxy of science fiction, C.F. Bentley provides a strong tale.-------------- Harriet Klausner
