Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Harold's wonderful purple crayon makes everthing he draws become real. One evening, Harold draws a path and a moon and goes for a walk-and the moon comes too. After many adventures, Harold gets tired and can't find his bedroom. Finally, he remembers that the moon always shines through his bedroom window. He draws himself a bed, and "the purple crayon dropped on the floor, and Harold dropped off to sleep." This little gem is filled with visual and written puns.
Horn Book
An ingenious and original picture story in which a small boy out for a walk--happily with crayon in hand--draws himself some wonderful adventures. A little book that will be loved.
From The Critics
Harold's fiftieth birthday (he appeared in 1955) finds him much the same as ever except for an anniversary sticker and a brighter jumpsuit on the cover. At the time, his creator, Crockett Johnson, was already known for political cartoons in New Masses, his comic strip Barnaby, and pictures for children's books by his wife Ruth Krauss. In the last decade of his life, Johnson turned to painting large abstracts based on geometric theorems. The paintings are mostly forgotten, but Harold has delighted children for generations with his insouciant look and his big purple crayon, with which he creates an entire universe of imaginative adventures on perfectly blank pages. Harold's graphic journey takes him through a wood (containing one apple tree), into the sea and a sailboat, up a mountain, and onto a balloon. He can conjure up anything with a line, including a fearsome dragon, a picnic of nine pies, a whole city of windowed buildings, and finally, his own window with the moon outside. As he settles into his cozy bed, young children breathe a sigh of relief and wonder. Johnson's style is, as he explained, "simplified, almost diagrammatic for clear storytelling, avoiding all arbitrary decoration." Baby Harold and his crayon live on—admired by artists like Chris Van Allsburg and Maurice Sendak, praised by critics, loved by children—as a celebration of the power of art and imagination. 1955, HarperCollins, Ages 2 to 7.

    Classic!

I love this book and have loved it since I was little. I am almost 30 now and have two kids, ages 5 and 6 who still love it. The story breeds imagination and it is not necessary to be read, as kids can see from the pictures what is happening. I love to give this as a gift for ages 2-3, and they will love it for years! This classic is an essential for any library! The illustrations are break-through and inspire a new kind of imagination.

    Harold and the Purple Crayon

It is a cute story that invites young children and readers to explore their imagination. This kind of book is good because it invites the children to leave the world of television and create theirown ideas. I found it very interesting that it only had one color but still invited you in. It is simple yet so good for children.

    Harolds Purple Crayon

Harolds Purple Crayon was discovered in school by my Grandson. I know it was his favorite book to check out. I believe for a while it was the only book he checked out. He about wore the Library copy out. Cory is now 17 years old. A few years back he ask me to send it to his new little cousin. She was 4 at the time. My sister kept the book at her house and read it over and over to My little Great niece. Now my great Niece has a baby brother and today my sister informed me that between the two children Harolds Purple Crayon is their favorite book and they have about woren it out.
I need to add that my Grandson's baby sister and my other Grand Daughter also loved this book.
When I passed on the thanks today from my Sister to my Grandson for sending this much loved book to them I also spoke to my Grand Daughter. She told me she still wants a new copy of this little book. She is now 14 almost 15. I ask her why this book was so special. Kodi told me Because he could go anywhere he wanted just by drawing it with his purple crayon.
While she seems too old maybe for this book I just ordered her another one and will give it to her for her birthday. She will hold on to it for her children ( a long way off at this time). I also ask my sister to hang on to the copy we sent to her and it will go back to my Grandson for his children someday.
I have given and read many books to my Children and GrandChildren but this little book has been an all time favorite and seems to be the closest to their hearts even today.
Please do not miss the chance to share this book with your little ones.
    Sincerely
    Nana of 5

    I Love Harold

Harold is cute, sweet and adorable. The illustrations, or I should say the lines that Harold draws with his crayon go on into the next page and continue on like a cloud, light and fluffy. It kind of takes me to never, never, land. Harold is so happy go lucky with his Crayon and is fun and inviting. A fresh breath of fresh air as Harold takes us into a world of imagination. What will Harold draw next? It reminds me when I drew a rabbit family on the wall when I was a child. My father said it was okay for each of us six kids to color on the wall as he was getting ready to paint it. Harold reminds me of days gone by. Whimsical and with a free spirit the author was ingenious with this idea.
It is a cute little book that every child should have in their collection.
I give this book a two thumbs up! Go Harold!

This is a delightful little book!

My daughter (a young mother) discovered this book as part of a recommended reading list for an Elementary Education class. It's a wonderful story about a little boy who creates his world with his purple crayon as he goes along. The illustrations are simple but effective. My daughter shared the book with me and I liked it so much I bought a copy for her and another to have at my home. My 3-year-old grandson loves it; it's one of his favorite books. (As a lifelong avid reader, I have more books at my home than toys for my grandchildren!)

You'll Need To Buy Two Copies of This Book

We wore the first copy of this book out; my son had to read it at least twice every night for months. With a simple story and even simpler drawings, Crockett teaches children that your imagination can take you any where and that it's okay to color outside of the lines.

A Classic Enjoyed By My 3-Year-Old

I remember this book as a kid, although we didn't have it at home. My son loves this book because he is obsessed with the moon, and a crescent moon is a centerpiece of this story. Harold draws his world with a purple crayon and the story chronicles his adventure until he becomes tired and wants to go home. He ends up drawing his bedroom window and "drawing" up the covers to go to bed. A cute story that encourages creative thought and stimulates interesting conversations about imagination.
