How to use the Dictionary

English-Chinese Side

Below you will find an outline of how information is presented in your dictionary. Our aim is to give you the maximum amount of detail in the clearest and most helpful way.

1 Alphabetical order

1.1 On the English side, strict alphabetical order applies for all headwords except for phrasal verbs (see 1.3 below). For instance, a headword with an initial capital comes before the same word with a lower-case initial.

1.2 Alphabetical order for headwords is as follows:

upper case
lower case
upper case + full stop
lower case + full stop
uppercase + numeral
lower case + numeral

B
b.
B4
BA etc.

1.3 Phrasal verbs appear in alphabetical order at the end of the entry they belong with and before any other headwords. Thus, buy back, buy in, buy into, buy off, buy out and buy up all appear before buyer.

1.4 Except for phrasal verbs, all other compounds consisting of two or more words are shown as headwords in alphabetical order:

pedestrian
pedestrian crossing
pedestrianized
pedestrian precinct
