When Jacques Duphly's third book of harpsichord pieces was published in 1758, a Paris newspaper reported that "his talent and merit are too well-known to have need of being extolled." Well, Duphly 1715-1789 is hardly known at all today. Given the considerable charms of this recital, more's the pity. The now-forgotten French keyboard master may lack the blazing brilliance of Jean-Philippe Rameau his illustrious predecessor, but Duphly obviously knew how to tickle the listener's fancy. The sumptuous recording was produced by John Phillips, who also built the sweet-sounding harpsichord Ms. Perl plays.
