Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Meet Harriet M. Welsch -- one of the most unforgettable, funniest characters in children's literature. Harriet is a girl with only one ambition in life: to be a spy. She works hard at it -- filling her secret notebook with observations about her parents, friends, and neighbors. But when her classmates find her notebook and read her mean comments about them, Harriet finds herself shunned by everyone. How can she put her spying talents to good use and make her friends like her again?
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Harriet is determined to become a famous author. In the meantime, she practices by following a regular spy route each day and writing down everything she sees in her secret notebook. Her life is turned upside down when her classmates find her notebook and read it aloud!. By Louise Fitzhugh. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
From the Publisher
A New York Public Library's 100 Great Children's Books 100 Years selection

"This is the book that made me want to be a writer. [Harriet] was the first fictional female character I ever came across who privileged her own truth above the expectations put on her as a little girl."  —Anna Holmes for Bookish.com

“I don’t know of a better novel about the costs and rewards of being a truth teller, nor of any book that made more readers of my generation want to become fiction writers. I love the story of Harriet so much I feel as if I lived it.” —Jonathan Franzen, author of Freedom and The Corrections

"Harriet the Spy bursts with life."—School Library Journal

"The characterizations are marvelously shrewd."—The Bulletin

    When I was little

I remember reading this when I was in elementary school. I hated reading then and I was neevr good at it. But my mother made me read a book and I picked this book. Even though it was really thick the cover made me want to crack it open. When I was little this made me want to read more.

    A child's ideas backfire

Keeping notes of everyone in her diary, Harriet's notions of her friends become known and they dislike her. She then tries to do good so they'll like her once more. Shows children that great ambitions at the cost of others isn't the way to go.

Don't you wish you were a spy ?!

The book is great because it makes you feel like a spy. It deserves 3 stars. Also you would wish that you were Harriet. It is the perfect children's book.

I want to kinda agree with #12s review.read #12and you will know what i am agreeing with.

Yeah HArriet was a nasty person and it shows that when ever you lie it comes back to bite you in the butt.but harriet did not really lie it was more of an unknow hobby that was a bad one. Yet her friends did know about what she was doing they just did not know all the deets ya know.THey did not know she was writing mean things abot them.but they made haarriet feel bad whe they were excluding her from their little club.tell me what you think and feel free to bounce off my ideas!!!!!!!

I highly recomend this book about a boy who writes what he thinks of people on a notebook. They aren't always nice things. But one day the notebook got stolen. Will that person read and find that herriet the boy thinks something bad about him? Read this book to find out.
