When she is fifteen, a shopkeeper crushes her skull with a scale weight as she interferes with the capture of a runaway slave. She marries a free black named John Tubman, but knowing that she—and any children she bears—will be slaves, she runs north to freedom. The years Harriet spent on the Underground Railroad, her Union service as a nurse, scout, and a spy during the Civil War, her marriage to Nelson Davis, and her struggle to establish and maintain a home for indigent, aged Negroes is dramatized in the last third of the book.
