Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bennett S. Greenspan, MD, MS (Medical College of Georgia)
Description: This is an in-depth review of imaging of the ill and acutely injured patient in the emergency department. First published in 1975, this book was last updated in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the contemporary concepts and philosophies for imaging patients who present to the emergency department with acute illness or injury. The authors easily meet these worthy objectives. This outstanding book has been, and continues to be, one of the leading references in the field.
Audience: It is written for imagers of all levels of experience. It is a valuable reference for experienced radiologists and an excellent book for trainees. It is also an excellent reference for emergency department physicians.
Features: The book is organized by organ system and body part. It begins with an evaluation of the skull and brain, for traumatic and nontraumatic intracranial emergencies. It then discusses the spine and the upper extremities in detail, then traumatic and nontraumatic abnormalities of the chest and abdomen. Separate chapters address genitourinary emergencies, and the last few chapters evaluate osseous abnormalities of the pelvis, hips, and lower extremities. The book is beautifully written, with chapters that describe complex injuries in very clear language. The images throughout are superb.
Assessment: This is a superb, well-written, and valuable reference that should be in the library of any radiologist who interprets radiologic studies from the emergency department. It also should be available to all radiology residents and radiology fellows who are involved in interpretation of emergency radiology studies. Updates throughout the book justify the new edition.
