Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Part of the "Tadpoles" series this Guided Reading Level C book entertains new readers with an amusing tale. Harry has gone to the fair and he is enjoying his ride on the Merry Go Round. It is magical as Harry's imagination takes him around faster and faster until he and the horse sail off over the treetops and under the sea. When he gets off he proclaims that it was magical and perhaps it was as the illustrator has put a few birds and some seaweed on Harry's wooden horse. It reminded me how much I enjoyed the Merry Go Round when I was a kid and in my case, I always wanted to be on the outside to catch the brass ring and get a free ride. The format in the series is interesting; the words in the text are introduced on the CIP page. At the end of the story there is a puzzle spread which asks readers to find the pictures in the story and tell which pages they are from. I am not entirely sure how useful this exercise is, but the Notes for Adults do offer some very useful activities such as using the jumbled pictures to retell the story. I think asking the readers to put the pictures in sequence might have been more useful that just identifying what pages they are found on. In spite of that quibble, it is an attractive and enjoyable book for early readers. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
