    pleasant story to read

Another in the "Chester Cricket and Friends" series that began with the award-winning book The Cricket in Times Square, this book tells how that shortly after Harry Cat and Tucker Mouse return from visiting Chester Cricket in Tucker's Countryside, Harry Cat finds a baby sheepdog puppy that has been abandoned in their neighborhood. Harry and Tucker, the latter somewhat reluctantly, decide to raise the pup, whom they name Huppy, in their drainpipe home, but he soon becomes too big and needs a better home found for him. Will Huppy go with the music teacher Mr. Smedly and his fussy Siamese cat Miss Catherine or with the wild dog Max who leads a pack in Central Park?
This is a pleasant story to read with one objection. In addition to a few common euphemisms (heck, darn, gosh), the word "Lord" is used twice as an interjection (i.e., "my Lord" and "good Lord"). I do wish that those who write for children would refrain from including language which everyone admits that we would prefer that children not learn and get into the habit of using. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book. As far as I know, it is out of print. We ordered our copy used from Amazon.

    Still remember this series

Years ago, my sister gave me these books to read, and I loved them so much, especially the puppy 'Huppy' that I named my stuffed dog and best pal this. The series was well worn by the time I grew older, having been read and re-read so many times, but to this day, I fondly remember the antics of the cricket, mouse, cat and puppy living in the drainpipe at Times Square!
