Overview

With his seemingly impossible escapes and incredible feats of illusion, Harry Houdini lived a life so fantastic that it seems almost too amazing even for fiction. Beyond his on-stage magic, Houdini also made his mark as an airplane pioneer, movie star, and debunker of frauds. His renown extended from his childhood home in Appleton, Wisconsin to Europe to Sydney, Australia. Children will thrill as they read about his seemingly superhuman successes—including when Houdini, hanging by his ankles and wrapped in a straightjacket, managed to free himself in less than three minutes. The biography also delves into Houdini’s impoverished childhood, his close relationship with his family, his start in show business—and how he managed some of his famous tricks.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jamaica Johnson Conner
Amazing risk-taker and escape artist Harry Houdini stars in this title, a part of the "Sterling Biographies" series. This book features the story of his life, his daredevil stunts (such as, surviving in a sealed coffin underwater for an hour-and-a-half and jumping off of bridges unscathed), and his remarkable escapes from a straightjacket, handcuffs, and even from a jail cell. In addition to a table of contents, a time line of important events in Houdini's life, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index, this title gives readers the feeling of knowing this master of showmanship, this movie star, devoted son, and loving husband personally. The text itself is appropriate for young teens reading at the ninth grade level. The pictures, newspaper clippings, posters, and more provide a museum-and-documentary-like visual quality to this book. Most importantly, in this biography, Mullin effectively conveys Houdini's dream: "I want my show to be the best of its kinds whilst I am alive. When I am dead there will not be another like it."
