Overview

For the first time, J.K. Rowling's beloved Harry Potter books will be presented in lavishly illustrated full-color editions. Kate Greenaway-award-winning artist Jim Kay has created over 100 stunning illustrations, making this deluxe format a perfect gift as much for a child being introduced to the series, as for the dedicated fan.

Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility.

All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley -- a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years.

But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry -- and anyone who reads about him -- will find unforgettable.

Editorial Reviews

The New York Times Book Review - Monica Edinger
…all that an old-fashioned book aficionado could wish for…Kay's illustrations, freshly re-envisioning the story, range from spot images to dramatic double page spreads, all pulsating with color and vitality. This gorgeous volume is sure to please all, from Harry Potter neophytes to longtime fans.
From the Publisher

Praise for the original publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

"A wonderful first novel. Much like Roald Dahl, J. K. Rowling has a gift for keeping the emotions, fears, and triumphs of her characters on a human scale, even while the supernatural is popping out all over. The book is full of wonderful, sly humor [and] the characters are impressively three-dimensional (occasionally, four-dimensional!) and move along seamlessly through the narrative. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is as funny, moving and impressive as the story behind its writing. Like Harry Potter, [J. K. Rowling] has wizardry inside, and has soared beyond her modest Muggle surroundings to achieve something quite special." -- The New York Times Book Review

"A charming, imaginative, magical confection of a novel. . . . A glorious debut, a book of wonderful comic pleasures and dizzying imaginative flights. There is no cause to doubt Rowling's abilities and promise, and every reason to expect great things, truly great things, from her in the future." -- The Boston Sunday Globe

"You don't have to be a wizard or a kid to appreciate the spell cast by Harry Potter." -- USA Today

"The story delights and the writing gives you goosebumps, the good kind." -- Chicago Tribune

*"Readers are in for a delightful romp with this award-winning debut from a British author who dances in the footsteps of P. L. Travers and Roald Dahl. Rowling leaves the door wide open for a sequel; bedazzled readers will surely clamor for one." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

Gr 4–7—Whether they're committed Potterheads who grew up reading the world-changing fantasy series or children just old enough to enjoy the stories for the very first time, readers will want to pore over this stunning illustrated edition, which features the full and unabridged text (with the exception of the title, the text is from the original British edition). From the dark and stormy endpapers to the ink-sploshed pages to Kay's expressive pencil and watercolor illustrations adorning almost every page, the story of Harry's humble beginnings with the wretched Dursleys, the arrival of his letter from Hogwarts, and his first adventures as "the boy who lived" come to brilliant life in this beautiful—and beautifully designed—edition. Though the size and heft might make library circulation somewhat challenging, this is a fantastic gift.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

This is a gorgeous book. The pictures of Harry pack an emotional wallop. It's a must have for any Harry Potter fan.

This book is BEAUTIFUL! Every page has something on it, ranging from full spread, half a page, medium size items in the middle of text, or pages with no illustrations but "ink blots" The pages are thick and glossy and the book has a built-in ribbon bookmark. It's a must have for Harry Potter fans, or younger children just starting to read the series. I can't wait until they do the rest of the books in the series!!!

I love, love, love this illustrated edition! More importantly, my 7 year old grandson loves it! I thought the time might be right to start reading the Harry Potter series to him. When he saw this book with its beautiful illustrations, he was immediately interested. We've only completed the first chapter, but he enjoyed it so much. He also loved flipping through the book to look at ALL the pictures. He especially loved the dragon eggs! I hope the whole series will become new again by adding illustrations by Jim Kay. Wonderful!

Jim Kay has done an excellent job of re-imagining the world of Harry Potter. Each illustration is unique and beautiful and only adds to the story, bringing it to life in a new way that not even the film could. I've adored the story since I first read it years ago, and I was happy to buy it again for the addition of Kay's illustrations. I can't wait to see what he will do with the rest of the series.

This has to be one of the most beautifully illustrated books on the market today. Just when you thought Harry Potter couldn't get any more magical, this edition comes along. I can't wait for the whole series to come out.

This book is absolutely stunning in print. The attention to detail and publishing is high above anything I could have imagined. I pray that they create these for the whole series, I would pay almost anything to have a complete collection! Jim Kay's art draws one even deeper into the literature page by page. This book is a must have at any age.

This is my millionth time reading this book, but my first time reading the illustrated version- worth every penny. Despite the lame American title, this book actually contains the British text which I appreciate because there was never any need to translate it for Americans. It adds more flavor to know that Albus Dumbledore, in fact, prefers sherbet lemons NOT lemon drops.
