Meet the Author

J. K. Rowling
J. K. Rowling
A phenomenon like Harry Potter does not come along very often. The young wizard and his eager companions Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley have inspired countless children to delve into reading with a fervor rarely seen, and we have J. K. Rowling to thank for that! Rowling has created a fantastic world of wizards and muggles, ghosts and trolls, and good and evil that has completely revitalized a love of reading in both kids and adults all over the world.

Biography

As the often told story goes, J. K. Rowling was on the brink of poverty, receiving welfare when her first Harry Potter book catapulted her into a stratosphere of stardom rarely enjoyed by any writer. While accounts of Rowling's destitution have been greatly exaggerated, her story is still something of a rags-to-riches tale not unlike that of her most famous creation.

Yes, Rowling did briefly receive government assistance after returning to her home country of England following a stint in Portugal, but that ended when she took a fairly well-paying teaching job. Rather than financial hardships, the period between a 1990 train ride from Manchester to London -- during which Rowling first conceived of a "scrawny, black-haired, bespectacled boy who didn't know he was a wizard" -- and the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was marked by setbacks of a more personal nature. Her mother passed away. She divorced her first husband, leaving her to raise her daughter alone. The writing career she'd always desired was becoming less and less viable as her personal responsibilities mounted.

Then came Harry, the bespectacled boy wizard she'd first dreamed on that fateful train ride.

The success of the first Harry Potter novel (given the slightly less lofty title of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the U.S.), in which the orphaned, seemingly ordinary boy discovers that he is not only a possessor of incredible powers but already a celebrity among fellow wizards, was far beyond anything Joanne Kathleen Rowling ever dared imagine. International praise poured in. So did the awards. Rowling won England's National Book Award and the Smarties Prize for children's literature. The series spawned an equally successful and hotly anticipated series of films starring the young megastars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson and featuring such venerable British actors as Maggie Smith, John Hurt, John Cleese, and Alan Rickman.

Rowling is responsible for introducing several new words and terms into the English lexicon, such as "muggle" (a civilian lacking in wizardly powers) and "Quidditch" (a fast-paced sport played while riding broomsticks). Perhaps most satisfying of all for the mother and teacher was the way she single-handedly ignited the literary pursuits of children all over the globe. Kids everywhere couldn't wait to get their hands on Harry's latest adventure at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is no small feat, considering that the novels tend to be exceptionally lengthy for books aimed at such a young audience (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is just a few pages shy of a whopping 900 pages!). Rowling has said that she conceives of her novels as "real literature," despite the fact that they are written for young people. Perhaps a testament to the literary merit of her books is the fact that they are nearly as popular with teenagers, college kids, and adults as they are with the grammar-school set.

With the massive popularity of her Harry Potter novels, Rowling has achieved similar fame and fortune -- for better and for worse. According to an article in a 2004 edition of Forbes magazine, Rowling's wealth was estimated at 576 million English pounds. In U.S. currency, that made her the very first billionaire author. The downside of that success is the unwanted attention she receives from Britain's notoriously relentless paparazzi. As Rowling lamented to Jeremy Paxton of the BBC, "You know, I didn't think they'd rake through my bins, I didn't expect to be photographed on the beach through long lenses." Rowling has also come under fire from Christian groups who object to her depiction of wizardry and witchcraft and certain critics who contest the "literary merit" of her work. Of course, one must always keep in mind that no one ever achieves Rowling's level of celebrity without having to listen to the griping of naysayers, none of which has impeded her continued success seriously.

Although Rowling could surely sell countless copies of Harry Potter books for as long as she is able to put pen to paper (and she does write much of her work in longhand), she initially conceived of the series in seven installments and has, of course, realized that plan with the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. "There will be no Harry Potter's midlife crisis or Harry Potter as an old wizard," she once told the Sunday Telegraph. As for what life after Harry Potter might entail for Rowling, she has suggested quite a number of possibilities, including ideas for adult novels and possible tie-ins to the Hogwarts universe involving periphery characters. Whatever Rowling chooses to do, she has forever guaranteed herself a place alongside Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, and L. Frank Baum as one of the most beloved children's authors of all time.

Good To Know

Rowling's parents met on a train, coincidentally from King's Cross station to Scotland. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when Rowling was 15, her mother died in the early 1990s. Rowling has a sister, Di, two years younger than she, who is an attorney.

Rowling's publisher requested that she use initials on Harry Potter covers, concerned that if they used an obviously female name, the target audience of young boys might be hesitant to buy them. Rowling adopted her grandmother's middle name, Kathleen, for the "K".

Rowling made a special guest appearance as herself on the hit cartoon show, The Simpsons.

With great success often comes great controversy. Rowling's Harry Potter books landed on a list of banned books because of their depiction of wizardry and witchcraft. However, Rowling regards her place on the list as a feather in her cap, as past lists have included works by such literary giants as Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, J. D. Salinger, and Harper Lee.

Rowling ran into a bit of potential trouble in the wake of stepped-up airline restrictions. While traveling home from New York, she refused to part ways with the manuscript of her still in-the-works final installment of the Harry Potter series during bag inspections. Fortunately, she was allowed onboard without further incident.

In 2001, two Harry Potter tie-in books were published: Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander. For those wondering who the mysterious Misters Whisp and Scamander are, well, they are actually both J. K. Rowling. The author donated all proceeds of her pseudonymous books to the charity Comic Relief.

Good to Grow On, Or For Those Who Have Already Grown

A series made for everyone 7 and up, the series is fantastic for helping younger readers build their vocabulary (seeing as the characters use a wider vocabulary as they get older themselves), and learn important life lessons.

The series is more than a vocabulary fun fest, though. The characters argue, they suffer from jealousy and anger, they cry. They have a realiztic relationship with one another, and they learn from their arguments what is important, and that's having and keeping each other. The stories have good morals, and endings that are reached realistically (considering that they are wizards, of course).

Rowling certainly shows that life can have happy endings, but at a cost. I think this rings true for most people ... That we have to lose some people along the way. That we can't have the people with us here and now, but we can still keep them in our hearts to help us move forward. That's an important thing that some people forget.

Despite the lose, the characters learn to overcome and do what they feel is the right thing. Yes, they may make mistakes, but so does everyone else, their world or ours.

The writing style helps to get through the books quickly, but maybe too quickly. I've found myself rereading and not remembering some parts. Maybe I was too excited, but it seems better the second time around.

Overall, this is a great series for anyone, young, old, or somewhere in the middle. I highly recommend it for someone who likes adventure, fantasy with a little bit of mystery and romance thrown in. A healthy combination for any reader.

    I love it

I accidentally stumbled upon the Harry Potter movies one day while sick and watching television. I turned it on after the show I was watching went to commercial. I was unable to return to my previous program because I became so engrossed in the story. At this point I had not read any of the books and, though I was able to follow what was going on, I was somewhat confused. After watching the most recent movie, I decided it was time to finally read the books. I have been unable to put them down since. They are extremely easy to read and even more engaging than the movies. They are also very beneficial in clearing up some of the more confusing aspects of the movies. The first three follow the movies pretty closely but after that, there are many deviations which keep it interesting. I highly recommend these books. The writing lives up to hype and provide a great way to spend a rainy afternoon!

5 Stars for J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series!

In my opinion J.K Rowlings Harry Potter series was a brilliant work of literature. Every Harry Potter book that i have read captured my attention, J.K Rowling did such a great job of absorbing the reader to read more. By the end of the first two books i was craving to read the rest. I finished the last two books in literally 8 days. J.K Rowling has a very imaginative mind, she has ideas in her books that people would never have thought of. Her amazing vocabulary usage, and unbelievable cliff-hanging ability leads many of her books to great eminence. J.K Rowlings Harry Potter books have to be the most extravagant works of literature that i have laid my hands on. Till this day i still wait for the rest of the Harry Potter Movies to come out so i can compare them to the books. I am giving J.K Rowlings Harry Potter series 5 stars.

    Harry Potter series

I guess that almost everyone loves this series, so my loving it is nothing special, but I really was obssessed with it. These books were THE BEST - with action, suspense, and humor. But I think what made this series truly magical for me was how real it all seemed, the characters, their feelings, their actions, even the magical world they lived in.

If you are a Christian and are torn about whether or not to read this series then read my review...

So, you are a Christian and not sure how to feel about the Harry Potter series. As a Christian that can be very understandable. I read reviews and many times hope that there is something that may light the path to a better understanding when it comes to issues like this. More often than not there is little to no help at all. I hope that I may be able to help someone at least have a somewhat easier decision concerning the Harry Potter Series. To start, this is a fantastic series for anyone to read. Yes, there is witchcraft in the books, let's just get that out of the way. But guess what! There is witchcraft in the bible. Reading these books doesn't mean you are practicing witchcraft or that you will want to practice it either. Honestly, these are really such wonderful books. So what else is in there? Well, how about murder. Yes thats there as well. Does that mean it's the devil? NO! It's not the devil as one of my uncles continues to insist. Harry Potter is beautifully written. It's about a boy who doesn't know he's a wizard. It's about friendship and love, honor and loyalty. It's happy and sad, light and dark, and the struggle between good and evil. Most of all it's a great read and will keep you coming back for more.
Now there are many reviews on the books so I will keep this short as to how the books and movies mesh. It's not until you get to the last part of the third book that the movies and the books really start to part ways. From that point on the books take off and surpass the movies in my opinion. But lets be realistic, the movies really do lend a hand in raising the story of Harry Potter to such fantastical heights!
As for children reading the series that's alright too. Of course these are a little advance for 2nd and 3rd graders. Children are smart and imagination is a wonderful thing. If you instill morals and values that are Godly in them then rest easy in that they will not be corrupted by the Harry Potter books. I have five children ranging from 4 to 14 years old and they love the movies. The 10 year olds are just starting to read the first book. So, like I mentioned before, the first book isn't for 2nd or 3rd graders most likely and 4th grade may be a little early as well when you are talking about children.
Listen: think for yourself! Use common sense and remember that we watch stuff on tv and read things everyday that are bad. Life has bad things but it also has such beauty. To ignore something just because some people in the Christian circle say that its evil cleary shows the ignorance of others in that circle. These books are not in the bad category. On the contrary, they are wonderful works of literature that will endure the test of time.
Well, I hope this may have help someone at least. If this did then please click on the "found helpful" tab. Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

Loved the Books, poor quality printing

Bought this box set back in April. So far books 2 and 4 have fallen apart at the spine, B & N will not exchange them as I am past my 14 day return period. Would not recommend this set if you plan to keep the and re-read at a later point, or potentially pass along to your children.

The stories are wonderful so far and have far exceeded my expectations!

Same great story but more convenient............

My daughters grew up with Harry Potter. We have all the hard bound books, and of course, we all reread them over and over. Now we are getting ready for the Opening of the new Harry-land and wanted to reread them all before we visit. The paper-back editions are just so much more convenient! Same great story, same fun, same entertainment value, just much easier to stick in your handbag or back pack.

    LOVE IT!

I started the series when I was about nine, and fell in love with it. I have always been a book worm- the kind that stay up all night to finish a book- but this series really got me started. I finished the series over a course of three years- waiting for the new books- but in all, I really read it in approximately two and a half weeks, and read the last one in two days. I adore long books, but hate to see a book not started or not finished,so these books were finished quickly, and since then I have reread the series three times! I have read more books than all of my friends, thanks to JK Rowling for getting me started.

I agree, this does contain all of the Harry Potter books

I can see right there in the picture that, indeed, all of the Harry Potter books are in this set and - in all liklihood - are actual Harry Potter books, not copies of Sense and Sensibility with Harry Potter covers on them.

    One never knows, though...

    ADDICTING.

For anyone who hasn't read the series and has just watched the movies, the books are a MUST! The movies are awesome as well but they leave little details out. Rowling does a fantastic job weaving the various subplots into a very intricately written story. Every book from 1 to 7 ties in all the stories into one. For people who think that it is hard to understand the vernacular created from this series, obviously hasn't read the books from the start because all terminology is explained throughout the series. Absolutely one of my FAVORITE series of all time.

    Wonderful!!!1

The first book came out when I was in the second grade and ever since I've been hooked. I've pre-ordered over half the books and seen every movie except one the day it was released. This series grabs you from the very beginning and keeps pulling you along till the very end. The characters are believable, the good guys lovable, and the villians absolutely dreadful. Rowling's writing wraps you up in the emotion and action of the story and makes your heart beat and tears come to your eyes. This is the only series of books and Rowling is the only author that has every made me cry. The Harry Potter books were my first all-time favorites and they will always be some of my favorites. I recommend everyone to read these books because they have something for everyone: fantasy and magic, action and adventure, duels, monsters, romance, struggles both inside and out, and laughter. These books are truly amazing and must reads.

    8 year fan

These are in my opinion the best books ever! I know I can't wait for the paperback box set! Harry Potter has truely changed who I am today. Without Harry Potter people would know me as a whole different person. It has become a HUGE part of me! J.K. Rowling is absolutely brilliant at writing. She makes the characters so lovable and she makes the reader really form relashionships with the characters. You cry when they die, laugh at them, and feel happy for them. I can't imagine a better book series!

I grew up loving these books, and so will my baby... :)

I'm going to buy this boxed set soon and display it in my unborn child's nursery. :) I'll also have other various Harry Potter themed things arranged around the room (a poster or two, maybe a little statuette...) Nothing to over-do it, but I love the idea. :)

    Awesome Series

I have read tons of books in my lifetime. I picked up the series when my daughter was ill about a decade ago and I haven't been able to put it down since. There are few books that I can honestly say I have re-read for the pleasure of it; this is one of those books.
I loved the way JKR wrote her characters, the story comes alive almost from the first chapter. Some characters are loveable, other likable and a few unlikeable but they are enthralling nonetheless.
I will miss learning more about them as they grow older but I guess, we all have to grow up sometime.
