Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 Just what beginning readers needed: another series of brightly illustrated, mundanely written little stories that claim to guarantee instillation of a love of reading. The four titles here turn ordinary situations into ordinary tales with stilted language and minimal plots. Harry Takes a Bath is a hippo who makes the most of his bath, from the snorkel gear he wears into the tub to the soap pictures he sprays all over the walls. The text``Clean hippo. All Clean. Messy bathroom. All messy!''drags down a story that could have been told soley through the flat, colorful, hippo-scale drawings. The action on Jason's Bus Ride starts when the bus stops. A dog who won't budge from the middle of the road finally ambles off after our hero has patted his head, and the bus can be on its way``Hooray! Hooray! They all drove away!'' The bright, new-wavey black line cartoons are the best thing about this boring bust of a bus ride. Mike and Tony are buddies who have a fight during a sleep-over. The situation is real enough but given such a lackluster telling and cartoony un real figures that it loses most of its potential. The full-color illustrations for A New House for Mole and Mouse are cleverly detailed and provide a humorous counterpoint to the text's descriptions, but they can't rescue a ho-hum story. The series on the whole, printed on heavy stock, is visually attractive and uses standard beginning-to-read devicesword repetition, picture clues. What it doesn't have are stories and characters that engage the brain, the funny bone, and the heart. Nancy Palmer, The Little School, Bellevue, Wash.
