Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Harry, a white dog with black spots, hates baths so much that when he hears his bathwater running he buries his scrub brush and runs away. Harry has a great time getting filthy in the dirt but soon is tired and hungry, He returns home, only to find his family doesn't recognize him, even after he performs all the tricks he knows. Finally, Harry tries a new trick-he begs for a bath, and once clean, is recognized at last.
New York Times
Harry is sure to be loved; especially by those pre-school children to whom dirt is an ever-delightful thing.

Children's NOTES Good Reads, Reissued This summer, old and new favorites get a second run. Originally published in 1956, Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion, illus. by Margaret Bloy Graham, chronicles the messy adventures of a runaway canine and his transformation "from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots." Despite his showboating, his family doesn't recognize him until he's scrubbed clean. In this reissued edition, Graham has added splashes of color to some of her original pictures. Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
This special 50th Anniversary Edition of the first Harry book is sure to become a favorite with a whole new generation of children. Harry is a most lovable black and white dog who has a whole range of adventures when he leaves his happy home in order to avoid getting a bath. He romps with the men repairing the street, in the railroad yard, and plays tag with other dogs. Each episode results in him getting dirtier and dirtier so that when he does return home, his family thinks he is a stray dog. Now Harry faces the task of getting his owners to recognize him as their pet. After several unsuccessful attempts, Harry digs up the scrubbing brush and takes it upstairs to the tub. The soapy bath reveals Harry to the family and he once again becomes "a white dog with black spots." Graham's newly drawn illustrations are perfectly attuned to the story and add greatly to its enjoyment. Children will want to hear and/or read this delightful tale again and again. It is recommended for first purchase.

    Yay for Harry!

I remember this when I was in Kindergarten. I'm eleven now, and its still great! Some of the things you can do for the Nook 'Read & Play' is that you put spots on a page, pop bubbles, play 'tag' with Harry, and a few more. Also, you can press Harry, and he'll do some sort of animation.

    This is a good one!!

The book is absolutely charming. My 3yr. old loves it. The voice reading the book is great, and the interaction for the child within the book makes it really fun. I wish they were all this great. Definitely worth the money. Keeps him entertained!

    Fabulous book for preschoolers

Probably my very favorite book back in pre-school. Doesn't make adults want to stick their head into a blender either....
    Love it!

    Good story, decent interactive features

My daughters loved the Harry the Dirty Dog series so I was happy to see it offered as a read and play book for their Nooks.

The story is exactly the same as the hard copy book. A few of the interactive features are cute, like when Harry digs in the dirt for his brush and when he slides down the coal shoot. Most, however, are dull.

If you are looking for the interactive features, I would suggest the Sandra Boynton apps and the Laurie Berkner book. If you are looking for children's classic with a few cute features, though, I would recommend.

    A metaphor for kids

A dog isn't recognized after becoming so dirty since he hates baths. A good metaphor for a child who is bad since his mom and dad may not recognize him/her from his/her behavior. A very funny book that prooves a point to kids.

    A True Children's Classic!

I read this book when I was a young boy, and I now read it to my son and daughter. My children enjoy this classic as much as I did as a child. I enjoy this book to this day. I will definitely read this to my grandchildren!

    Wonderful!

One of my favorites from childhood. My granddaughter loves the interactive play. Some books have audio that can be difficult to hear, this one has clear, concise sound. A great addition to a child's library!
