Overview

In a country village, a family of New Yorkers encounters a chilling ancient rite.

After watching his asthmatic daughter suffer in the foul city air, Theodore Constantine decides to get back to the land. When he and his wife search New England for the perfect nineteenth-century home, they find no township more charming, no countryside more idyllic than the farming village of Cornwall Coombe. Here they begin a new life: simple, pure, close to nature—and ultimately more terrifying than Manhattan’s darkest alley.

When the Constantines win the friendship of the town matriarch, the mysterious Widow Fortune, they are invited to join the ancient festival of Harvest Home, a ceremony whose quaintness disguises dark intentions. In this bucolic hamlet, where bootleggers work by moonlight and all of the villagers seem to share the same last name, the past is more present than outsiders can fathom—and something far more sinister than the annual harvest is about to rise out of the earth.

Meet the Author

Thomas Tryon (1926–1991), actor turned author, made his bestselling debut with The Other (1971), which spent nearly six months on the New York Times bestseller list and allowed him to quit acting for good; a film adaptation, with a screenplay by Tryon and directed by Robert Mulligan, appeared in 1972. Tryon wrote two more novels set in the fictional Pequot Landing of The Other—Harvest Home (1973) and Lady (1974). Crowned Heads (1976) detailed the lives of four fictional film stars and All That Glitters (1986) explored the dark side of the golden age of Hollywood. Night Magic (published posthumously in 1995) was a modern-day retelling of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

I read this book when it first came out and I'm going to order it just to have - just brace yourself if you decide to read it - Tom Tryon wasn't a very good actor - but as an author of some pretty chilling books - he's outstanding. Women rule in this one....

I first read this book many years ago, probably in the 70s when it was written, and recently decided it was worth a revisit. The story still packs a wallop: a city couple and their teenage daughter move to a remote, idyllic New England village and soon learn of the dark doings therein. The impact on the family is powerful and unforgettable. Recommended for a good autumn read.

Did not see the ending coming until the very end. A page turner for sure!

Suspenseful and creepy. You know horrible things will happen as you read Ned's story, but you're not quite sure what they will be. Great classic read

It took until page 360 of the 375 pages to get to the point, I wanted to poke my OWN eyes out after reading this book. It wasn't the creepiness that was promised. I respect the authorship, though.

Predictable most of the time, but I enjoyed it.

One of the first horror novels I read. Just re-read it. Still spooky. Highly recommend!

I remember my teacher read this to my class when I was 10! Can't say my parents were happy to discover why I was having bad dreams, but over 30 years later I still remember it. Bette Davis was great in the movie.

Good read. Starts out slow, but worth hanging in there. I loved The Other, written by this same author. This book is not quite as good, but def. not a bad book. Think Children of the Corn w/ adults. Like this author too, might try another by him!

Having forgotten that I had purchased this in softcover several years ago after I started reading it. This time around I found it macabre. Change in my state of mind, I sppose, due to my age.
