Description: This handbook is organized into two broad areas: general toxicologic pathology and organ specific toxicologic pathology. The first edition was published in 1991.
Purpose: The importance of the discipline of toxicologic pathology is far reaching in the application of regulations to products and product liability. The subject has implications for both human and animal health, particularly relative to the safety evaluation of drugs, agrochemicals, and other materials and equipment used in medicine, agriculture, and industry. The book is intended to provide an educational resource in the interface between the disciplines of applied toxicology and toxicologic pathology and this objective is accomplished well.
Audience: Although the book has clear importance for the student of toxicology, this is also a useful reference for teaching faculty, particularly relative to general pathology mechanisms and some foundations in good research study design. The text contains some useful reviews of basic pathology mechanisms, but it is clearly not targeted to clinical education. Many of the contributors are highly recognized for their expertise.
Features: This two-volume set contains 44 chapters that cover basic pathologic mechanisms (such as carcinogenesis, apoptosis, oncotic necrosis, etc.), study design, statistics, report writing, lesion classification, clinical pathology and systems pathology. The major strengths of the book are the summaries of mechanisms, which can then be explored in more depth in primary journal literature, and the scope of coverage.
Assessment: The book is very readable, well-referenced, and current. The quality of the work represents the rigors under which most toxicologic pathologists work. It provides a unique summary of most of the disciplines that any practicing biomedical research scientist would find useful. This is an excellent book for research training.
