What’s really going on in Hashimoto’s?

This New York Times Bestseller is the result of three years of research and two years of testing byDr. Izabella Wentz, a clinical pharmacist who wasdiagnosedwith Hashimoto’s in 2009. She combined emerging research with clinical expertise to identify and remove the triggers that caused her to develop Hashimoto’s.You may have heard that thyroid medications are the only treatment option for people with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism, and that there is no way to halt or reverse the autoimmune process once it starts. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: The Root Cause dispels that myth and shows how targeted lifestyle interventions allow the body to rebalance and halt the autoimmune process allowing the thyroid to recover.

Hashimoto's is more than just hypothyroidism. Most patients with Hashimoto's will present with acid reflux, nutrient deficiencies, anemia, intestinal permeability, food sensitivities, gum disorders and hypoglycemia in addition to the “typical” hypothyroid symptoms such as weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss, fatigue and constipation. The body becomes stuck in a vicious cycle of immune system overload, adrenal insufficiency, gut dysbiosis, impaired digestion, inflammation, and thyroid hormone release abnormalities. This cycle is self-sustaining and will continue causing more and more symptoms until an external factor intervenes and breaks the cycle apart. The lifestyle interventions discussed in this book aim to dismantle the vicious cycle piece by piece. We start with the simplest modifications, by removing triggers, and follow with repairing the other broken systems to restore equilibrium, allowing the body to rebuild itself.

In this updated printing of a book that has sold more than 80,000 copies since 2013, Dr. Wentz shares her DIG-AT-IT approach, a systematic method that helps to identify triggers, as well as a healing protocol that tackles the triggers.

When I was diagnosed in December 2013 with Hashimoto's, I felt the rug had been swept out from underneath. I left the medical office unclear of where to turn and cried from frustration. After visiting with my doctor, different one then diagnosed me, she requested that I read Izabella's book. She told me she had another patient with Hashimoto's who was having very positive results by following the recommended suggestions Izabella's book outlined. I read it and felt hope but completely overwhelmed at all of the lifestyle changes I needed to make. It's been almost four months since diagnosis. I have read and reread "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause". I understand so much more clearly what I am doing and feel a great hope for my recovery. My thyroid hormones are turning the right direction and I am digging away to find my root cause. Thanks Izabella, there is hope for recovery!

If you listen to your body and take advantage of the tools and shared knowledge in the book you may be able to reverse the thyroid problems you have now. The key is knowing when you are out-of-balance and taking action. I wish I had this book available 25 years ago when my thyroid issues started but it has taken me over ten years to realize that changes to diet can be a major turning point for balancing a system with Hashimoto's symptoms! Very pertinent information is shared by this author- Thank You!

If you can only get one book to learn about Hashimoto's, this is it! It is wonderfully organized and helps you approach each aspect of this disease. It talks about the anatomy and physiology of the thyroid and its hormones, proper diet recommendations, supplementation, different thyroid replacement hormones, and immune and gut function. It offers suggestions for dealing with the symptoms of thyroid disease. It can be enjoyed and understood by both the science buffs non-science thyroid patients. Dr. Wentz really did a good job with this book, and I hope there's a revised version as new information continues to come out!

It is obvious that Dr. Wentz has really put a lot of time and effort into the research and the writing of this book. Although I am only part way through the book at this point, I can tell that Dr. Wentz has really done her homework, and has paved the way for Hashi's sufferers to unlock the hidden factors, and the root cause of their Hashi's diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Hashi's over 20 years ago, and thought I would never feel like 'me' again, I now have hope! Every person with Hashimoto's should read this book!! Thank you for writing this book, Dr. Wentz!!

This is one of the most helpful books I've found on Hashimoto's. I'm realizing more and more that most endocrinologists don't have the knowledge or interest level to effectively treat this disease, making Dr. Wentz book invaluable. She explains complex medical ideas in everyday language that I had no trouble understanding, to the point that I feel like I can then relay that information to my doctor. Of particular interest were her explanations of necessary lab testing and supplements. I especially love the outline of what time of day she recommends taking different medications and supplements, as I had not been able to find that information in a concise way anywhere else.

Admittedly, I'm only halfway through this book, but I can't imagine a Hashimoto's sufferer NOT finding help here. A very thorough review of the current knowledge, as well as reasoned and safe recommendations for helping yourself in a time when so little help is forthcoming from the conventional medical community. Yes, it could have benefited from some good editing, but that doesn't detract from the value of the information contained herein or its accessibility.

I loved this book. It is such a useful tool working with doctors, especially with the test chart. It's also great for helping yourself. This book is a great place to start your learning. Or if you've already absorbed a lot of information on Hashi's, you will certainly find more here, and find it well organized.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago and have not been able to gather this much information from my doctors, the internet and forums on my own. This book is a great resource for anyone with Hashimoto's, and is very encouraging to know that someone else was able to get their Hashimoto's under control.

Really gives some good advice for supplements to try and tests to get. Everyone is different, so don't think everything in the book will work for you, but well worth it for the things that do end up working!!! Good information to go to your doctor with. I like that it's written by someone that went through the same struggles I'm facing. It gives me hope. She's very realistic in telling you straight out that none of the strategies in the book are a miracle cure and you'll feel better overnight. She tells you how long it took for her to notice a difference, whether it was 6 months or a year or two.

I expected more from this book with all the raving reviews. It's very technical and if you have no knowledge of the disease it will not be helpful to you. I thought this book would narrow down so e alternative treatments and diets to try but so many options are discussed which made the book to overwhelming. If you are looking for education or supplements and what to eat you will be better off buying a cook book.

Normally, I’m not one to write reviews, but this is the book I've been waiting for! I have been searching and searching and I feel like I just stumbled onto a gold mine. I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's in May 2014 not knowing anything about this disease and I ordered this book. It is my go-to reference book. I have highlighted, put notations in margins, stuck sticky notes on pages, and copied quotes.  Following all of Dr Wentz's advice on nutrition and supplements from her book on Hashimoto's has completely transformed my life for the better. I feel clearheaded, no longer suffer debilitating aches and pains in muscles and joints, my headaches and jaw-clenching have lifted, my lymph nodes are no longer swollen, my hair is healthy, and I have lost so many pounds that my grown-up children tell me I look more and more like myself, when they were young. I started with antibodies at 1854 and a TSH of 78.7.  I am now current at 2.6 TSH and antibodies at 504. I owe this to Dr. Wentz and her amazing book.  This book has saved my life. I cannot begin to express my gratitude.
