ALONE
Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present — and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parent's divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair — it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.
For twenty years Gary Paulsen's award-winning contemporary classic has been the survival story with which all others are compared. This new edition, with a reading group guide, will introduce a new generation of readers to this page-turning, heart-stopping adventure.
After a plane crash, thirteen-year-old Brian spends fifty-four days in the Canadian wilderness, learning to survive with only the aid of a hatchet given him by his mother, and learning also to survive his parents' divorce.

We recommend this book Hatchet to 5th graders and 6th graders who like adventure and exploration. Most of the book is about a 13 year old boy named Brian who survives in the Canadian Wilderness. He had to survive from wild animals and try not to starve to death! From being a city boy his skills won't help him here. This book is good, read it!

The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen was a great "chapter book" for our family. My boys are 10 and 6 years old. They could remember each night what happened the night before because they really cared about the main character, Brian. My son's 3rd grade teacher is now reading it to her class. Even the "restless" kids are silent and still.
I think the writing style lends itself a bit better to silent reading as opposed to reading aloud because it is all thoughts in Brian's head. The thought segments made for a bit awkward reading at times but worth the effort.
I love books that can offer knowledge we can store in the back of our minds for future reference if needed. Challenging times make us stronger!
Some 6 year olds may find some parts too scary, but 8 and up will love it.

Hatchet is any amazing book. Hatchet is a book about a 13 year old boy whose parents are divorced. Just because of a secret. One day he was flying on a plain to see his dad. The next thing you know the plane crashes into a weird shaped looking lake. He is stuck on a stranded island and trying to survive and get back to his dad. He has to survive with very little plant food and salty water. But how will he be able to survive? Read it in the book Hatchet.

I love this book! Normally I have a hard time finding a book I like but when I do I can't put it down. Hatchet is one of those books. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat! This book takes a huge turn when Brian's pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes. I do disagree with a few things though. For instance, out of nowhere a tornado comes at Brian in the middle of a Canadian forest. Also, an insane moose attacks him in the woods and forces him into a pond. Gary Paulson also makes his sentences one word or half a page. Last his ending was way too short. It was as if he ran out of pages. Overall I recommend this book to action lovers and people who like suspense.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Brian Robeson is a thirteen-year old, flying in a single-engine plane to visit his father. The pilot suffers a massive heart attack and dies. Brian must somehow land the plane. Brian lands the plane but now he is lost and alone in the wilderness with only a hatchet. Will Brian survive? I chose this book because someone told me it was good and it was on my fifth grade reading list. I am ten years old. It's a good story but some of the parts were a little to detailed for me and they made me a little sick to my stomach. I think this book would be good for sixth graders and older.

This is the worst book i have ever read in my entire life. It's about a boy who is stranded in the Canadian wilderness. It is gross, upsetting, and has absolutly no imagination in it. It is also weird. The book talks about divorce, seacrets, death, and is very depressing. The movie is even worse. Take my advice and don't read this book.

In the book Hatchet, Brian Robenson is driving with his mom to New York to stay with his dad. Because his mom and dad got divorced because his mom cheated on his dad. Right before Brian left the car his mom gave him a hatchet as a gift. While Brian was flying to New York something happened. He was in one of those two person planes which was pretty small. The driver had a heart attack and died the plane stayed up for about an hour. Brian had to think fast to control the plane sense he thought it would just run out of gas and go down. But when the driver had a heart attack he kicked something a little switch or something which through them off course. Sense it was out of gas he crashed into a lake in Canada not New York. And that is were our adventure begins.

Hatchet is boring. All that really goes on is: He finds food. He sees a new animal. He has a flashback. One more boring thing happens. Brian is an Idiot as far as I'm concerned.
