About the Author

Boo Black is the pen name for Rebecca Wells Phillips. Boo is a play on words because she hated herself for being black. Rebecca graduated from Carson-Newman University and has two Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Communication Arts (Broadcast journalism) and English (Literature). Her hobbies include writing poems, short stories, fiction, autobiographies, and nonfiction historical books. The author's current projects include Dragonfly Passion by Rachel Bleu, a follow-up to Butterfly Blossoms, and Hurricane Helene Resiliency After the Storm Part One, which will be published in August 2025.

Rebecca comes from a political and religious family that taught her to always put others' needs first, and that's what got her in so much trouble with her emotional health. Through counseling, she has discovered the importance of putting herself first and loving herself, as illustrated in her book, Loving Self by Boo Black.

Engaging in interviews and podcasts with people around the country, Rebecca has a clear understanding of the need for more self-love and self-care, and she does a daily LIVE on each of her social media platforms, reminding her followers of these important subjects. She opens and closes each LIVE session with "Be Kind" and wears a shirt with those exact words.

Following a friend's loss of his teenage son because of the bullying he received at school and online, Rebecca dedicates Hating Self and Loving Self to anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one. Realizing that she has a unique voice and purpose on the subject, Rebecca seeks to help parents before it's too late.

Currently living in the Asheville area, Rebecca considers it the home she never had. Surrounded by the mountains, she's discovered a place that welcomes diversity and is open to people who are different. Her religious upbringing reminds her that each one of us is different and special in our own way, and that's the way we're supposed to be. God doesn't make mistakes, and God has a purpose for every event or experience we endure. Whether black or white, religious or non-religious, anyone can find their purpose and learn to live authentically by loving those differences. The darkness that follows you won't last forever, and what doesn't break you only makes you stronger.

Be the light in a very dark world. Be the spark that ignites the flame of love and acceptance. No matter how dark or how bad life seems right now, it's not where you'll stay. Change is inevitable. Embrace it fully.
