Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Author Loomis says she "fell in love with hippos as a kid at the old Central Park Zoo and has maintained her own hippo collection for thirty-five years!" With Hattie, she adds a delightfully insouciant character to the collection of literary hippos. As the star of four mini-dramas for the youngest listeners and viewers, a completely self-absorbed Hattie bounces along like a big gray ball happily adorned with perky outfits for all occasions. For dancing, there's a pink tutu (Shades of Dance of the Hours from Fantasia!); for a picnic, a sweet yellow ensemble with a white collar; for playing and hiding, hippo jeans and chic little tops. Listeners will laugh (and want to join in) as each of Hattie's adventures ends unexpectedly with an "Oops!" Loomis' amusing, deftly rhymed text and noted illustrator Neubecker's witty watercolors combine to introduce a wide-eyed little creature with a talent for enjoyment. Can readers (or parents) resist Hattie as she lays a checked tablecloth under a tree for a picnic of tea and chocolate cake? No more than Hattie can resist eating and drinking it all while her bemused guests (an elephant and a rhino) look on. Oops! The large FORMAT: and engagingly sophisticated style make Hattie's mishaps perfect for a read-aloud as well as for sharing one-on-one.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-In each of four episodes, a young hippo encounters a self-imposed mishap. When ballerina Hattie leaps through the air, she overshoots the waiting arms of her rhino partners. She eats all the food while her guests go hungry at her tea party. In her wading pool, she splashes the water away in a cannonball jump. During hide-and-seek, Hattie falls asleep in her hiding spot. In short, punchy rhymes, Loomis has created an enthusiastic, resilient, and endearingly oblivious heroine. Surrounded by copious white space, the warm watercolor-and-ink cartoon illustrations are funny and mesh well with the sparse text. Young children will both laugh at and identity with Hattie.-Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Hattie Hippo is fat. Not surprising, for a hippo, but apparently endlessly amusing. Or that's what her creators presume. In four short vignettes, Hattie's size plays the starring role. In "The Ballet," Hattie twirls and leaps-and misses the two rhinos poised to catch her, landing off-stage (and off page) with, one assumes, an enormous thump. At "The Tea Party," Hattie greedily gobbles down all the goodies, leaving her guests with none. In "The Swimming Pool," after squeezing herself into an itsy-bitsy striped bikini, Hattie cannonballs into the blow-up pool and sends all the water splashing out. And in "Hide & Seek," Hattie hides ineffectually behind various pieces of furniture before falling asleep under the table. Loomis's jaunty rhymes and Neubecker's cartoon-style illustrations obviously are intended to amuse. But Hattie is too much of a caricature for kids to connect to, and adults may not be able to get past the very likely unintentional fat-bashing. Disappointing. (Picture book. 6-8)
