Overview

Haunted Heartland is a compendium of the unbelievable and the fantastic: ghosts, haunted houses, possessions and exorcisms, vanishing people, mysterious lights, spontaneous combustions, poltergeists, and dreams of premonition.

Authors Beth Scott and Michael Norman have collected over 150 true "ghost stories" from America's Heartland: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin. What is perhaps most striking about Haunted Heartland is that each of the stories originated in these supposedly peaceful states. From haunted mansions in Ohio to a Nebraska classroom lost in time, and from haunted manganese mines in northern Minnesota to ancient specters wandering the Ozark hills of Missouri, Scott and Norman lay to rest the notion that hauntings occur only in moss-draped southern plantations or shuttered, clapboard cottages along the Maine coast.

All of the incidents have been reported as fact to the authors. Whatever the tale or whatever the locale, the stories in Haunted Heartland will cause you to stop and ponder the perplexing world of the supernatural.

"There is a cumulative, chilling effect in the simple telling of these unexplained events. . .amazing tales."--Chicago Magazine

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA Over 150 true ghost stories from America's Midwest are collected in this excellent, easy-to-read book. Scott and Norman make the stories short and to the point without extensive atmosphere or characterizations. The stories are believable and leave readers questioning whether or not parapsychology is the inexact science that it is considered. Robert Lombardi, Prince George's County Public School System, Md.
From Barnes & Noble
This fascinating collection of stories takes us from haunted mansions in Ohio to a Nebraska classroom lost in time, revealing aspects of an America you never dreamed existed.

    This Book Blows!

The name 'Haunted Heartland' is a great name for a ghost book, but it's a sin that they put all the worst ghost stories in it, the ghost stories in that book are either impossible (even for a ghost stories) or just not believeble I give this book one lousy star.

My Critique on The Haunted Heartland

The Haunted Heartland Book, is one of the many great, chilling ghost stories books there are in the wonderful world of books. But, I think that this book leaves you wondering what will happen to you in the near future or even in the next couple of seconds. Reading all of the stories from the different states (Kentucky, Kansas and Mississippi), just to name a few, make you want to go to those places in person and check out these haunted places and haunted people that are now legends and being published in books with reviews. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of ghost stories and who loves that feeling of chills going up and down your spine and the adrenaline that you get just thinking about being in those people's shoes, seeing the ghosts, and the headless horseman, or the little boy crying at the park. Those are just a couple of haunted legends, just to name a few. When I read this book, I was getting so into it every time that I picked it up, that I didn't want to put it down! When I was done reading it, I told my mom to read it too, since she likes haunted stories and books. I gave this book a 5 star rating! REad it!!

The best accumulation of ghost stories ever

This book has so many intresting ghost stories. You don't have to read them in any order, which is one of the best things, other than that the stories are true and not made up. Some might be questionable, or otherwise hard to comprehend something like it being real. I give this a five because I enjoyed it so much.

    Haunted America Series

I bought two of the authors books at the same time. My husband read one, while I read the other. We both got so scared, we had to put the books away for the night. Truly scary stories! If you love to be scared, you'll love Haunted America books!
