Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Silverman
This graphic novel is a "high interest/low reading level" mystery but it is also a ghost story. Originally published in Great Britain, the plot involves Jack, a teenager whose newly divorced mother has transplanted them both to a cottage by the sea. Aside from the fact that he misses his father, Jack is thrilled with the location—he loves to surf and even the warning signs around the beach do not bother him. However, one day he sees a young man surfing Crab Rock, the most dangerous part of the beach. As he watches, it looks like the young man is in trouble, so he begins to try to paddle out—just as his mother comes outside and calls him for dinner. When he explains what he has seen, his mother is baffled because she sees nothing at all. Who could that young man have been? The rest happens very quickly. Jack's neighbor Peter looks very much like the young man on the surfboard who was, it seems, his twin brother who died surfing Crab Rock last year. Peter feels that his brother's spirit cannot rest until he has surfed the rock, although "he'll never do it now because he's dead." So maybe someone will have to do it for him—and who better than Jack? Hi-Lo books need to be looked at from both angles, of course, and the "high interest" is definitely here. Jack's mother's point of view is as clear as can be. She does not want her son in danger—he is all she has. The "low reading level" is taken care of with a glossary. There is also a list of Internet sites that "Our investigative staff has already sniffed out great sites for you!" But the sites are not listed. Instead, there are very clear instructions about how to get to them. The old-fashioned comic book graphics areokay but nothing special. In general, then, recommended.
