Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
St. James's debut novel is a fantastic paranormal historical set in England between the World Wars. Sarah Piper is a young woman who has been sent by her temp agency to assist Alistair Gellis, a WWI vet and troubled ghost hunter charged with investigating a barn haunted by the specter of 19-year-old Maddy Clare. However, Maddy refuses to interact with men, and so Sarah is thrust to the forefront of the inquiry. When she arrives at the barn, Sarah is overwhelmed by Maddy's spirit, who demands that she return with Alistair and his enigmatic assistant, Matthew Ryder. The ghost demands that the trio find the men Maddy wanted to kill before she committed suicide, and why, or she will drive Alistair insane. As Sarah and Matthew work frantically to discover Maddy's murderous plans, they confront increasingly resistant townsfolk and their own irresistible attraction to one another. By the time they learn Maddy's secret, it may be too late for all involved. Though readers may surmise the ending long before the last page, St. James deftly ratchets up the tension in this thrilling ghost story. (Mar. 6)
VOYA - Erin Wyatt
Sarah Piper ekes out a living working for a temp agency in 1920s London. When she is hired as an assistant to ghost hunter Alistair Gellis, her world turns upside down. Alistair, a wealthy and handsome man who did not escape unscathed from his service in World War I, has taken on the investigation of the ghost of Maddy Clare, a maid who is said to haunt the barn where she committed suicide. Sarah is sent to deal with the ghost, as Maddy, in life and in death, could not abide the company of men. This is no meek spirit—she is physical, angry, and wants vengeance, willing to force Sarah to comply with her final wishes by any means necessary. More help arrives in the form of Matthew, another member of the team, with whom Sarah has a steamy and powerful connection. A compelling ghost story, the book is written quite beautifully, weaving elements of romance and mystery with a gothic twist. All the main characters, including the ghost, have been damaged by the various tragedies that have struck them in their young lives. The book explores post-traumatic stress, loss, and the need to find a way to move beyond the past to claim a future, or in the case of Maddy, to rest in peace. Offering a glimpse of life in England between world wars as the twenty-something ghost investigators stay at a country inn, the book proves a satisfying, chilling read. Reviewer: Erin Wyatt
Kirkus Reviews
Sarah Piper, a self-proclaimed modern woman living in London, finds herself living a ghost story in this post–World War I tale. A temp agency offers Sarah a job with a mysterious, handsome writer, Alistair Gellis, who carries scars from the recent Great War. His postwar passion finds him writing travel books—as dry and academic as he can make them—about various haunted sites in England, but his interest is piqued by the case of a haunted barn in the small village of Waringstoke; a young maidservant hanged herself in her employer's barn and has been making mischief and threats ever since, most recently terrorizing a local vicar when he is called to perform an exorcism. According to her former employer, Mrs. Clare, Maddy, the ghost, hates men, so if Alistair is to verify the haunting for his next book, Sarah will have to confront the angry spirit. Feeling adrift in her life and intrigued by Alistair's company, Sarah agrees to the job, embarking on a terrifying journey into the damaged psyche of Maddy Clare. Capable of manipulating her environment and producing hallucinations, Maddy is not resting quietly. Not only must Sarah and Matthew Ryder, Alistair's tough and war-scarred friend, race to discover the truth behind Maddy's life and death, they are soon caught up in Maddy's troubling obsession with Alistair. Through fog, darkness, nightmares and fire, Sarah and Matthew fight to save their friend while also succumbing to their own heated attraction. Along the way, they meet all the mysterious figures one would hope to find in a small English town: the brash new-money aristocrat and his unhappy, beautiful wife; the distrustful gravedigger; the man who watches outside Sarah's window. And of course, Maddy, the one who connects them all and is either seeking peace—or revenge. A chilling start gives way to a more predictable ending, but fans of the modern Gothic novel will enjoy filling up a few creepy hours.

If you like ghost stories, you will like this book. I really enjoyed reading the book. Bought it because it sounded like a quick read and a fun read. It met all my expectations. I read it in one day. Couldn't put it down.
The story involves a young woman and two men who are ghost hunters. It takes place in England after WW I They go to a quiet English town at the request of a woman who says that her barn is haunted by a young girl who lived with them. There is romance, a ghost haunting and a good mystery. Sarah is the character that the ghost has made contact. Sarah is the heroine of the story and saves the two men and the village. Good ending and a good mystery. Tried to find some other books that the author wrote but was unable to locate. I hope that this isn't the author's first and only book. Would love to see this as a series. I could see Sarah and her friend, Matthew, as ghost hunters solving ghost stories that involved murder or some other mystery.

Simone St. James doesn't disappoint. If you are looking for a real, page turning ghost story, her books are always a delicious read. I know many ghost story novels end up with cheesy endings, or not being "real", but these books are always what they proclaim to be. This book had characters I grew to love and identify with, as well as a creepy story that kept me turning pages late into the night. While this book does have a couple of sex scenes, which i usually dont care much for, they blend overall into the storyline, actually aiding in the development of the characters. I would highly recommend any of Ms. St. James' books for those who are looking for a creepy, interesting read with a bit of history and romance.

    A good, entertaining read

The book isn't a literary masterpiece or best seller material, but I still enjoyed every page of it. It is a short book and when combined with its page turning characteristics, I finished the book in just a few days.

I've been wanting to read this for awhile and finally got the chance. So worth it. There is a great balance of romance, mystery and eerie paranormal encounters. So much emotion and you can easily visualize everything that happens. I couldn't put it down, I read it in three days. A great story.
