Havana Dreams

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
Spanish chanteuse Sonia Santana makes her debut with a disc that revels in the heyday of glitzy Latin music: Think 1945 in Havana's Sans Souci and you get the picture. The mix could be the set list for any hip cabaret orchestra of the time, ranging from Hollywood's Good Neighbor-era hits, such as "Tico Tico" and "South American Way," both popularized by Carmen Miranda, to Latin American standards. Great Cuban composers such as Ernesto Lecuona ("Say Sí Sí" and "Siboney") and the light of Mexican cinema, Alberto Dominguez ("Frenesí" and "Perfídia"), weigh in heavily. What keeps Havana Dreams from being a total nostalgia exercise is the teeth-bared attack of the Saratoga ...

What keeps Havana Dreams from being a total nostalgia exercise is the teeth-bared attack of the Saratoga Band. This Cuban big band, led by Tony Perez, the piano monster with Irakere and Giraldo Piloto's Klimaxx, funks up the old charts with youthful glee. You wouldn't confuse their rendition of "Quizás Quizás Quizás" for Xavier Cugat or Nat Cole. For her part, Santana struts and vamps through the material, her full-blooded voice evoking that of Albita or La Lupe, just this side of hysterical. Those who grew up with these songs might not appreciate the stridency, but newcomers will cotton to the campy renditions and the smart veneer of this capable band and dynamic singer.
