All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
For anyone who grew up during the last days of AM radio, anyone who remembers gas shortages, disco scarves, and feathered hair, this mammoth seven-disc box set, Have a Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box, will be a holy grail of nostalgia. If you were born in the 1960s, you'll probably find this stuff enjoyable rather than embarrassing (to the degree that you can think back on your adolescence without cringing). But don't let the music distract you from the packaging, either. The box is covered in avocado-green shag carpeting (embroidered with a happy-face pattern), and the booklet contains photos of all the artists, essays on the politics and culture of the period, and capsule references to notable events, fads, and people. Only Rhino Records could have put out a reissue package of music, images, and text this perfect.

    Nostalgia in Tunes!

This is an extraordinary collection of great '70's music, the best I have seen and believe me, I've been collecting! Get out your old bell bottoms (I know they don't fit, but, hey!) Think shag carpet and big hair and boogie! This really brings back memories and has hours of music. It really is, by far the greatest selection of 70's music, from "Boom Chick a Boom" and "The Night Chicago Died" to a little bit of Disco, some Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, ELO, "Theme from Shaft", TO "Brandy" and "Lady" by Styx. I stumbled across it when trying to locate the instrumental, "Joy" by Apollo 100. Bringin' back memories? BUY IT! You'll be glad you did! Lisa P.

    When Musicians Played Music

If you were a teenager or young 20 something in the 70s, then this is a must have. Be there with Frampton, Skynard and others in concert again and hold that lighter high. Laugh at songs again like "The Streak" and "Chick-a-boom". Amaze yourself that you still remember the words to story songs like "Convoy" and "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". With every guitar riff, piano solo and news bite, you'll be transported to a time of flare bottom jeans, hoop earrings, and "spirit of '76" t-shirts. If you loved the music of the 70s, you'll love it even more the second time around. So, go ahead...turn it on, turn it up and rock on!

    What, are you kidding?

I would never, repeat NEVER, purchase this set of CDs. I would have given it a "0" star rating, but one star is the lowest option offered. This is typical of most compilation albums. There are too many different and competing genre. Nobody that I know would listen to the entire track list. In fact, most people, depending on their preferred genre, would probably skip 80% of the tracks. This set is like a BAD AM radio oldies station. As such the set is GROSSLY OVERPRICED. Of the 164 tracks, again and again, I found myself scratching my head and saying, "Who is this?" "Never heard of them," or "Never heard of this song," or "You've got to be kidding." The song and artist selection is sadly lacking. In fully 50% of the cases where I discovered an artist whose music I would purchase individually, the particular song chosen was far from the best example/most enjoyable of that entertainer's repertoire. Bottom line--SAVE YOUR MONEY. If you are the sort who enjoys compilation albums, there are scores of them whose format is much, much better than this one. For the price, you can buy several compilation albums that you will enjoy from beginning to end. Better yet, you can buy roughly the same number (7) of CDs of your favorite artists.

Music for More than One Generation

A tremendous collection of some of the finest hits of the 70's that will bring back memories of that first kiss, graduation, and just plain cruisin'. This collection hits all segments of society with true equality giving pop, funk, disco, rock and more with an equal voice. Isn't this what the 70's were all about? Intertwined amongst the non-stop hits are sound bits from the many numerous news items that made the 70's worth remembering and re-living. It's about time to teach these songs to your children or grandchildren! Peace, far out and rock on!
