Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This collection of "hero" facts and activities will benefit teachers who are creating lesson plans on such Americans. Each "American Hero" is listed in a table of contents—which is nice because they are arranged according to birth year rather than common interests or order of significance in the American timeframe. Each hero has two to three pages of facts, a small quote, project/activity ideas, and a caricature. The activities range from word games that deal with a specific subject matter to an idea of how to bake a dessert that looks like Betsy Ross's flag. The fact that the book is totally done in black-and-white and has a focus on content versus esthetic appeal will enforce the idea that this is a supplement to curriculum instead of a quick fact book for students. Most of these celebrated heroes are white males, although a few other cultures and women are also represented. The interests of the heroes range from sports to social reform. An answer key (to all the brain-teaser activities) and an index complete the book. 2006, Jossey-Bass/Wiley, Ages 10 to 14.
