Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Perfectly paced and quietly dramatic, this fanciful tale of monsters run amok can be used with groups as well as for one-on-one sharing.” —School Library Journal

“A good choice for story hours.” —Booklist

“Joel Stewart's world is charmingly off-kilter and gently strange. I had never seen anyone like his Addis Berner Bear before, and I had certainly never seen a Sneep. I’m grateful Joel brought them to life, and you will be too.” —Brian Selznick, winner of the Caldecott Medal for THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
Our young narrator, in sprightly rhymed couplets, asks us a series of questions about possible encounters with some rather unpleasant imaginary creatures. He is surprised that we haven't met them. The Sneep who pinches your picnic, the Snook who disturbs your reading, the Grullock who tries to swallow you, the Floon who bounces you, and the Knoo who chases you home all seem to give him a terrible time. So if there are none of these where you live, guess who is moving in with you? And there they all are on the book jacket/cover, either inviting us or daring us to open the book. Stewart's watercolors provide only the most elemental of props, but are detailed in defining the frustrations of our hero and the quintet of imaginatively depicted pests. These seem more amusing than frightening, however, reinforcing the humor of the witty story. Don't miss the small adventure on the end pages. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1—In rhyming text, a boy relates a woeful tale of trying to have fun but being plagued by monsters that ruin his every pleasure. Each encounter begins with the child asking readers if they've experienced a similar situation. To his increasing chagrin, the answer seems to be no ("You haven't?" "Not ever?" "Not that either?" "Never?"). The pleasing and unexpected conclusion is sure to be met with a smile. The muted, almost fuzzy-looking illustrations feature the small barefoot and straw-hatted boy setting up his fun with a hint of monster trouble somewhere in the background. A turn of the page finds him meeting up with an increasingly fanciful array of pastel-colored adversaries. The artwork alternates between full-color washes that cover the pages completely and spreads that isolate the boy against expanses of white space. Perfectly paced and quietly dramatic, this fanciful tale of monsters run amok can be used with groups as well as for one-on-one sharing.—Marge Loch-Wouters, La Crosse Public Library, WI
Kirkus Reviews
In this deliciously silly rhyming read-aloud from Great Britain, a boy asks readers if they've ever had their picnics pinched by a Sneep or their peaceful reading time ruined by a deafening Snook or "Surely you've spied a Floon and thought, / ‘Of all the curious things!' / Gone in to take a closer look . . . / and discovered that it springs?" He is surprised each time the reader's answer seems to be no ("Not ever?" "What?!") and decides if the readers' lives are truly so trouble-free, "I'm coming to live with you!" (Unbeknownst to him, the pesky creatures are right on his heels.) Stewart's soft watercolors are thoroughly charming, and the intrusive beasts in their old-timey get-ups are comical and only borderline creepy, from the bulky, pink, bald, bespectacled Sneep (in her pointed shoes and yellow, polka-dotted dress) to the hippo-like Grullock with cauliflower and spider influences and the tiny, tutu-sporting Floon. The elegantly spare composition, clean design and few words perfectly suit the call-and-response format. Giggles are guaranteed. (Picture book. 3-7)
