Worley's stately, macho baritone combines on this disc with arrangements that strike a scintillating New Traditionalist balance between true-blue styles and subtle pop and rock embellishments. Such distinctions, however, may be lost in the blunt message behind two of the new songs, chiefly the title tune. Inspired by the events of 9/11 and Worley's visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, "Have You Forgotten?" is an unabashedly prowar anthem -- war against terrorism, not Iraq, although that point was moot by the time of the album's release -- powered by pounding drums and anguished slide guitar wails. Worley lays out his vengeful position in sober, unambiguous language: He's John Wayne to Toby Keith's Gen. Jack Ripper. Fiddle and twanging guitar drive "I Will Hold My Ground," a feisty neo-honky-tonk statement of purpose expressing one man's (and by implication, one nation's) resolve to fight back, because "it's just not in my blood to lay down." Worley still finds time to have a sense of humor -- especially in another new song, the lilting, Jimmy Buffett–style tropicalia of "I Need a Breather" -- even as he infuses his songs with substance and depth, addressing a variety of personal and social topics. Those who don't buy the message will still find a lot of reasons to cast a vote for Have You Forgotten?

Darryl Worley started to gain a larger audience in 2002 when his second album, I Miss My Friend, brought him to the top of the country charts, so he was on a career upswing prior to the release of Have You Forgotten? in 2003. Have You Forgotten? contains 16 songs, with six songs apiece from Worley's first two albums, 2000's A Hard Rain Don't Last and the aforementioned I Miss My Friend, which constitute half of each record. Of the four new songs here, three are war-related and the fourth finds the singer stating "I Need a Breather," wishing he was wasting away in a Margaritaville, since he needs a break from "this angry boss man." Worley goes out of his way to align himself with the red, the white, and the blue, standing in front of the stars and stripes on the front cover and posing with troops on the back. Then, of course, there's the flag-waving fervor of "Have You Forgotten?" itself, in which Worley attempts to fuse the anger of Toby Keith with the tear-jerking Alan Jackson. The results feel more calculated than heartfelt, overshadowing the material from his first two albums, material that nonetheless suggests Worley could be a neo-traditional country singer with some real promise.

    MUSIC THAT MAKES YOU REMEMBER, CRY, LAUGH, AND WANT TO HEAR MORE

    AT 43, I HAVE HEARD GREAT COUNTRY MUSIC. NOW, I HAVE HEARD COUNTRY MUSIC THAT IS BY FAR,THE BEST THERE IS NOW. THE SOMGS MAKE YOU REMEMBER THE GOOD AND BAD OF LIFE. JUST AFTER YOU SHED SOME TEARS BECAUSE IT IS GOOD TO REMEMBER, YOU HEAR FAMILY TREE AND LAUGH OUT LOUD. EVERY SONG MOVES YOU. IT IS REAL COUNTRY MUSIC AT ITS VERY BEST.

    A proud American and big country music fan

    I have not heard this cd, but I have heard each song live and they are all wonderful. There is a mix of slow ballad-y songs and kick-butt country two-stepping songs. Also, he sings very true songs, such as POW 369, and have you forgotten; they all hit home because my dad was in the AF for 20 years and I understood the danger he was in everytime he went away from home. I highly reccomend this album.

    Haven't heard the album in it's entirety, but the title song stole my breath away

    I remember the first time I heard "Have You Forgotten". There is nothing to say about this song that somebody else hasn't already said.. it's message is overwhelmingly powerful, and most of all, honest. I believe in the President and the United States of America. I was devastated when I first heard we were sending the troops to war; I also know their was no other alternative. I enjoy my freedom, my son's freedom, and I thank the Lord everday, that we have such honorable men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line to help keep our country safe and free, for themselves, for us, and for all of our families. I feel sorry for anyone who has opposed the war in Iraq. Wars are never wanted, and they are never fair, to all parties involved, but sometimes, they are just neccessary. Bless you Darryl Worley for your song. As for the one reviewer who doesn't understand why Darryl wrote about the attacks of September 11th, being that the song was released during our invasion in Iraq... I don't think it matters when Darryl Worley released this song; the message is still loud and clear, and it is a song that has honored "ALL" of the fallen heroes, and expresses the love that he has for his country. The love that we ALL have for our country.

    Well-deserved Recognition

    This is a great album. Darryl Worley is a vastly underappreciated singer and writer. "Have You Forgotten" is great, if only because it finally brought this artist to the forefront of country music. Those who do not know his previous albums are in for a treat.

    WOW!!

    This entire collection is wonderful. There are many songs that make you think, wonder and dream, as well as tap your toes and sing along. My favorite song (this week) is "Have you Forgotten?" I have heard and seen many people against the war, but the reason behind the war is still there, burried under ground in New York, PA, and at the Pentagon. Thank you for this wonderful song!!

    Best Song Written!

    This has to be the best song written, right next to Toby's "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" (The Angry American). These artist are outstanding American men and I support them 100%. This song gives me chills each time I hear it. I don't understand how you can be an American and not support our troops and our president, George W. Bush, right now, please stop and listen to each word of this song!

    Excellent album

    Excellent album, very country, yet it is an album that can be listened by those who just dabble in country. Most importantly is the powerful messages contained in the tracks! Especially "Have you forgotten".

    Music was good but the message was muddled

    You know I didn't really mind the song. It had a nice rhythm and it featured some good guitar playing. However the message was horrible. I'm not quite sure why he's asking if we have forgotten about the attacks of September 11th, being that it was released during our invasion of Iraq. He probably should have released it closer to the beginning of the war on terror.

    Makes You Remember

    My kids and I have become hooked on this song. It gives one goosebumps when reflecting back on exactly why we are overseas. What we have today didn't come with out a price. Freedom isn't free as they say. Darryl Worley rocks with this song and reflection as to why we should support our troops. I've said I think this would be a good song for the pilots to play when they are fixing to go kick some butt.

    This is a GREAT song!!!!!!

    My dad is in the air force and once I heard that song I new that my dad would love it!! He heard it on the radio before I even could tell him and he loved it. He has just be sent over seas and this song makes me feel better when I hear it on the radio. You should get this CD the first chance you get and listen to the song on the radio. It's great!!!!!!!!!
