Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
From Pearl Harbor to the Alaka’i Swamp, upper elementary readers explore the depth and breadth of Hawai’i in this third revised edition from Scholastic’s “America the Beautiful” series. Brightly color-coordinated chapters cover everything from geography to the various periods of exploration and settlement through modern times to economy, government, and culture. Throughout, a map of the state is frequently presented as a reference for young readers who may struggle to distinguish Kaua’i from O’ahu. Large, color photographs of contemporary Hawai’i as well as a wide variety of historical photographs supplement the text and provide plenty of visual interest, and sidebars, including WOW factors and FAQs, highlight fascinating facts to keep readers engaged without interrupting the text or overwhelming the page. The narrative is well paced for an elementary audience, with plenty of clear topical headings to break-up pages of paragraphs and vocabulary words in bold that are immediately defined in sidebars on the same page. Kent does not gloss over the injustices exercised on the Hawaiian people by other cultures and governments, and she also brings up the environmental challenges that growth and increased tourism have brought to this area renowned for its natural splendor. Hawaiian terms are included and defined throughout, however, no pronunciation guidance is ever provided. An island-by-island travel guide, writing, art, and STEM project suggestions, a timeline, a glossary, an index, and a Fast Facts section are just some of the things included in the extensive backmatter. Overall, this title is an appealing, thorough resource for school reports. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith; Ages 9 to 12.
