Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Over 70 million years ago, the Hawaiian Islands, created by violent volcano activity, began rising from the Pacific Ocean. This title in the "America's National Parks" series introduces report writers to the geology of the island of Hawaii, the political history and mythology of the Hawaiian Islands, and the founding of the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Visitors had always been awed by the fiery eruptions and enchanted by the beauty of lush flowers and foliage. Beginning in 1906, with endorsements from prominent figures like John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, interest grew in establishing a national park, finally realized in 1916. (Since 1912 the Volcano Observatory had been monitoring the two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa.) Readers will learn about exotic flora and fauna of the park, including the ohia lehua tree's scarlet blossom and the nene or Hawaiian goose. Other chapters discuss the park's environmental problems (air pollution, fire, invasive and endangered species, effects of global warming) and recreational activities like hiking and surfing. Though some photos are included, the main focus of this series is directing students to thirty appropriate Internet sites about history, science, tourism, and sports, where further exploring can be done (sites are linked to the publisher's website). A good deal of information is included in the reader-friendly text, but writers who have access to a computer will find more spectacular visuals on the official website Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and A Field Ecology Guide to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Gr 4–8—Though this clear and informative book can stand alone, it opens with a page directing readers to a Web site that the publisher will maintain until 2014. It is followed by a simple map of the park and one of the state with the park highlighted and a spread of quick facts. The body of the book covers general information, history (both of the Hawaiian Islands and of the park), flora and fauna, environmental problems, and recreational activities. The illustrations are clear, bright screen shots from related Internet resources as well as black-and-white and color photographs, some of them covering entire spreads. Back matter includes an annotated list of the links that are found at the publisher's Web site.—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK
