Kirkus Reviews, April 15, 2011
Whether you decide to tote along the handbook on your next intercontinental flight or save it for that long-awaited summer cookout, a priceless resource that’ll pay off even if the cataclysm never hits.

Kirkus Reviews

Just surfaced in angry seas clinging to the hull of your capsized boat, or crawled from the rubble of a collapsed building following an earthquake? U.S. Army vet and TV survival guru Hawke's expert know-how may be your best chance to make it home alive.

Eminently readable, this lean, no-nonsense survival guide from the star of the Discovery Channel's Man, Woman, Wild is stocked with real-world advice on how to survive virtually any disaster. Outfitted with generous graphs, illustrations and bullet points, Hawke's guide engages without becoming heavy-handed. Topics range from the importance of survival psychology to in-field immunization. Whatever environment you might find yourself in when catastrophe strikes—jungle, desert, arctic, urban—you'll likely be prepared as never before. Learn how to snuggle up in a swamp and craft your own water purifier out an old sock and some leftover charcoal. Throughout the tutorial, the author never lets you forget that, in most cases, survival simply comes down to having the right attitude—and often a really sharp stick. Readers sitting in their comfortable living-room chairs may never feel compelled to try and construct their own spring-loaded snare or bamboo fire saw, but there is an undeniable sense of empowerment that comes from at least having some clue as to how to go about it in an emergency. The book is also compact and durable for easy transport.

Whether you decide to tote along the handbook on your next intercontinental flight or save it for that long-awaited summer cookout, a priceless resource that'll pay off even if the cataclysm never hits.

Great read, from beginner to expert!

This book is very easy to read, and- retain.
The style is simple so it makes it easy to remember.

Written for the novice and inexperienced,
it makes sense of why things should be done as well as how.

For the expert, there are lots of tips and considerations
that are omitted in most other books on the topic.

As enjoyable as it is informative- a great read for anyone, at any age.

    A must read

For anyone planning on leaving their front yard this is a must read. Let me preface this by saying I have been survival/extreme camping for most of my life. I have learned a lot through trial, error, pain and even a bit of blood. Mykel Hawke has a lot of hard earned experience and knowledge in the area of survival and he passes this along in a common sense manner spiced with his sense of humor. I learned a lot of little tricks from this book and so will others. Like I said. For anyone who plans on leaving their front yard this is a book that will help them make it home.

    Against the grain

Wonderful, usable, accurate way for anyone to live long enough and loud enough to be rescued. Would love to see CPT Husband & CSM Wifey do another show together, but instead of being rescued as the goal, being able to survive off the grid in close proximty to the grid without being detected. Should come much more naturally to someone of Hawke's pedigree.

There is a market for this.

At any rate, fantastic survival guide. I hope Myke intends to continue to teach the wayward indigenes of this technological world how to stay alive when the lights go out.

Thanks for your efforts and for continuing to entertain the masses.

FYI CSM has come along way...

    Best,

Former GB Bro from the beautiful AOR of the 1/10th

Great essential read for anyone into survival or bushcraft

Mykel does a superb job at informing his audience, through easy to remember sayings and acronyms. As elementary as the lessons are each and every lesson is based on actual military standards. No fancy names for chapters, just the basics. Very self explanatory, his medical advice is second to none. Based solely on that, this is a must read.
