Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Hawkman was one of comics' earliest superheroes, appearing since 1940 in a variety of incarnations. Recently he was thought dead, but in the Justice Society book JSA: The Return of Hawkman writers Johns and David Goyer reintroduced him and began sorting out his tangled history. Hawkman's adventures continue in this first volume of a promising new series, written by Johns and James Robinson (known for his excellent work on DC's Starman). Hawkman, a.k.a. archaeologist Carter Hall, is the latest reincarnation of ancient Egyptian Prince Khufu and retains the memories of all of his former lives. His lover Chay-Ara has also been reborn, in the body of Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl), but Kendra cannot remember her previous lives. Together they go to the city of St. Roch (a DC-universe New Orleans analog), where they become field agents for the Stonechat Museum and search for the murderers of Kendra's parents. Green Arrow guest-stars (and rubs Hawkman the wrong way). The impressive art is detailed and realistic in the super-heroic manner. This is an above-average superhero book, recommended for all but the smallest teen and/or adult collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Solid super hero story!

Somehow writers Geoff Johns and James Robinson along with penciller, Rags Morales, are able to take the ridiculously convoluted history of the Hawks and push it slightly to the side to tell a good straight forward story. While the back story is still there, it doesn't bog the book down. The interplay between the Hawks is emotional and always interesting. Sadly, as with many DC books, there is a certain corniness to the villains. Morales pencil work is beautiful. Overall a really solid book.

    Fantastic

Very clever reworking of the Golden Age Hawkman blending in the Conan the Barbarian with wings style adventure with modern times. Having contrasting personalities and agendas between the two Hawks allows for Carter and Kendra to butt heads in a way that Hawkman and Hawkgirl never did. All in all, very respectful of DC's past and paves the way for better stories in the future.
