And such a life would not be one that would substitute for warm feelings insensibility; but one which would, in the midst of the severest trial and suffering, repose in the arms of Jesus, like a sick child resting in the bosom of its loving mother, with a feeling of security in the very midst of its pain. This is one of the blessed fruits to be obtained in this life from trial, and one which glorifies God more than an undisturbed life of activity in His service can possibly do; for it is, as it were, a present realizing of the promise, 'If so be that we suffer, that we may be glorified together.' Yes, the very glory is commenced now, in that lowly, meek, and loving spirit which is wrought in us by the Holy Ghost; when it is given to us, not only to believe in Jesus, but to suffer for Him, and with Him, and through Him. "I have been led to meditate of late upon the blessings which a loving Father intends that His children should reap through a participation in suffering. Children of God are too apt to adopt the language of the world, and speak of all trial and suffering with sorrow, almost forgetting for a time 'the peaceable fruit of righteousness' which they are to yield to those who are exercised by them (strengthened spiritually, as the body is physically by gymnastic exercises). Our aim should therefore rather be to say to fellow-believers when under affliction, 'Oh, don't lose this blessed opportunity that the Lord has given you of growing in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!'
