Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - George Galuschak
Hayate Ayaski works so many part-time jobs that he doesn't have any time to be an ordinary high school student. When his deadbeat parents sell his internal organs to the Yakuza to cover their gambling debts, Hayate has no time left at all. The Yakuza have no intention of waiting until he's dead before they collect. Hayate decides to turn to a life of crime—unfortunately, he isn't a competent criminal and ends up rescuing the girl he intended to kidnap and hold for ransom. Thirteen-year old Nagi Sanzenin, the girl in question, falls for Hayate's rugged good looks. She offers him a job as her new butler, a job offer Hayate foolishly accepts. Three days later—after running afoul of a berserk robot, engaging in hand-to-hand combat with Nagi's pet tiger, and being forced to model a pretty sailor dress—the Yakuza are starting to look like a pretty good deal. Hayate the Combat Butler is a comedy-romance manga. The plot revolves around the misunderstandings that arise from a love triangle (Hayate/Nagi/Maria), and Hayate's ability to absorb superhuman amounts of physical abuse. Hayate is a likable guy—he's honest, reliable, hardworking and probably not too bright. Other members of the cast include Nagi, a spoiled brat; Klaus, the sinister head butler; and Maria the maid, the smartest of the bunch. Contains comic book violence and mild sexuality; this is recommended for collections that emphasize shonen (boy's) manga.
