Haydn: Divertimenti für Streichtrio, Vol. 2

All Music Guide - James Manheim
Haydn's trios for two violins and cello were composed around 1760. The instrumentation sounds like a stripped-down Baroque trio sonata group, but Haydn, in a catalog of his works he himself compiled several years later, indicated that he meant specifically a cello rather than a basso continuo group. Johannes Gebauer, leader and first violinist of the Camerata Berolinensis trio, argues that these trios, underperformed in comparison with the baryton trios from later in Haydn's career, are actually more important.
They're a mixed bag and were apparently composed at different times, not as a set, but these performances make a persuasive case that these pieces served as a laboratory for experimentation with the ambitious Haydn chamber music to come. The movement sequence is not standard at all; two of the trios have only two movements, and three of the five end with minuets. But the Allegro movements, especially the Allegro moderato track 4 of the "Divertimento in F major, Hob. 5/10," and the opening Allegro of the "Divertimento in E flat major, Hob. 5/17," are taut, complex essays in sonata form, arguably beyond anything Haydn was writing in any other genre at the time. The sharp-edged performances by this Berlin group, using original instruments tuned a half-step lower than modern concert pitch, emphasize the seriousness of the music. The sound, recorded in a Berlin church, is not good; the big empty space roughs up the sound of the violins of Gebauer and Fiona Stevens. But Gebauer, who edited the performing versions of the music used by the players, is on the right track here with a crucial piece of the puzzle that is Haydn's early style.
