Haydn: Favourite Symphonies

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
This three-disc 2008 EMI set called Haydn Favorite Symphonies featuring conductor Otto Klemperer leading either the Philharmonia or the New Philharmonia is a straight reissue of recordings previously reissued on CD in 1990. Previously, it was part of EMI's Otto Klemperer series devoted to the recordings of the indomitable German conductor. Here, it is part of EMI's "3" series of three-disc set re-releases devoted to specific chunks of the standard and not-so-standard orchestral repertoire. Either way, the set contains five superlative old-school Haydn interpretations recorded between 1960 and 1972, the year before the conductor's death. There's no denying that the earlier performances are more robust. The vigorous tempo of "No. 88"'s closing Allegro con spirito and the smooth legato of "No. 98"'s Adagio cantabile are outstanding examples of Klemperer at the peak of his strength and concentration. But the force of "No. 95"'s opening Allegro moderato and the intensity of "No. 102"'s Adagio are incontrovertible proof of Klemperer in the wisdom of his old age. Whether with the polished Philharmonia in the two oldest recordings or the equally polished New Philharmonia in the later recordings, EMI's stereo sound is rich, lush, and deep. Anyone interested in Haydn or Klemperer who does not already have these recordings on their shelf should certainly check out this release.
