Overview

A student string quartet will usually cut its collective teeth on some of Haydn's 80-odd works in that genre. This is as it should be, for Haydn pretty much invented the medium himself. Not only that, but his ingenious mixture of folklike simplicity, contrapuntal intricacy, tender expression and rollicking good humor transformed the string quartet into one of the most sublime of all musical forms. So, it only makes sense that any tour of the literature begins with Haydn. The Kodláy Quartet has recorded all of Haydn's quartets for the budget label Naxos, providing an amazingly affordable way to explore this profound and enchanting body of work. This disc offers three of the composer's best-known quartets, which should certainly whet your appetite for more. Each of these works has a nickname inspired by some aspect of the music -- "Emperor," "Sunrise," and "Fifths" (though these monikers weren't necessarily bestowed by the composer). And just to demonstrate how central these quartets are to our culture, the noble theme that opens the slow movement of the "Emperor" was adapted to become the German national anthem.
