Haydn: Symphonies; Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphoses

All Music Guide - James Leonard
What made Eugen Jochum a great Haydn conductor? There's his seemingly effortless conducting technique that lets every detail emerge from an ideally balanced ensemble. There's his apparently intimate knowledge of the music that captures both its sense of energy and its sense of elegance, its feeling for thematic transformation, and its feeling for organic rhythm. But never mind technique and knowledge. What really made Jochum a great Haydn conductor was his profound humanity, that is, his mind, which grasped Haydn's playful wit, and his heart, which grasped Haydn's inherent soulfulness.
In these live performances with the London Philharmonic from 1973 of Haydn's "Military" and "Clock" symphonies, Jochum digs deep into the wit and soulfulness of the music, turning in performances that dance and delight, that sing and soar, that bring a tear to the eye and a smile to the face; in other words, true Haydn performances. But while Jochum's way with Haydn had been documented in his Deutsche Grammophon's recordings of the composer's "London Symphony," his way with Hindemith is all but unknown except to the audiences who heard him lead the modernist German composer's scores in concert. This 1977 recording with the London Symphony of Hindemith's spectacularly virtuosic "Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber" is only Jochum's third Hindemith recording Orfeo has released a coupling of the "Cello Concerto" and "Symphonic Dances" and it's stunning. Brilliantly played and energetically conducted, Jochum and the LSO's "Symphonic Metamorphosis" is bright, colorful, funny, and absolutely irresistible. Although fans of Jochum may be hard put to identify their man, they may also be surprised and pleased with his range as a conductor. In both the Haydn and the Hindemith performances, the BBC's sound is a bit edgy and a little harsh, but still amazingly present and astoundingly immediate.
