Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 91 & 92

All Music Guide - Mike D. Brownell
Continuing in its exceptional line of Haydn albums to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's death, Harmonia Mundi here reissues a magnificent 2004 recording of "Symphonies No. 91" and "No. 92," as well as the "Scena di Berenice." All Music Guide - Mike D. Brownell
Continuing in its exceptional line of Haydn albums to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer's death, Harmonia Mundi here reissues a magnificent 2004 recording of "Symphonies No. 91" and "No. 92," as well as the "Scena di Berenice." Led by countertenor-turned-conductor René Jacobs, the Freiburger Baroque Orchestra plays with the richness and fortitude of an ensemble many times its size while maintaining the intricacy, delicacy, and close attention to detail that distinguish the great chamber orchestras. While these two symphonies, the last Haydn was to write for Paris, are not among his most popular or well known of the 104 written, Jacobs truly brings these works to life with lively, spirited leadership from the podium and clear, scholarly understanding of the score. Mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink's effortless, delightfully pure singing in "Scena di Berenice" adds an enjoyable centerpiece to the two lively symphonies. Harmonia Mundi's sound is crystal clear, allowing listeners to appreciate every aspect of the wonderfully nuanced performance that does great honor to this anniversary year celebration.
