Edward Payson Roe was one of the foremost authors of the late 19th century. His books were most popular with both the middle class of America and England. Because of his being a clergyman, this fact led to his fame of the day. This particular piece of fiction is a truly beautiful love story of James Holcroft. At the beginning his wife, the love of his life has died. His struggles with attempting to find a housekeeper leads him on a dead-end path. But a boyhood friend finds Alida who too is at the end of her 'rope.' The ending is surprising and truly heart-warming. The book was published in 1886 but its story is as modern as the 21st century!
a different story. kept me wondering how it would turn out. very good story line. would like more of his writing
I didn't like the way the auther wrote it enough to finish it.
Both my sister and I absolutely LOVED IT!
This is one of my favorite books ever! A lonely, widowed farmer has had disastrous experiences with hired help. A young woman has just found out that her "husband" was already married to someone else. The two in need agree to a business marriage. But is it possible to keep it for business only?
