Gripping story of child abuse, domestic violence and corruption in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. Not at all unaware, a son and daughter chronicle the events leading up to the mysterious death of their mother. This book is the first to explore the mysterious death of Janyce "Janny" Hansen, a former top model from Denver, Colorado. She, along with her husband and children, live in an upscale home in the suburbs. The community sees an affluent, glamorous family. The reality is far different--an abused wife who can't let go; a husband who beats and sexually assaults his adopted children--while running gambling and prostitution businesses from their home.

In the early morning hours of September 21, 1984, Janny's husband returns home to discover her lifeless body in his Mercedes convertible parked in the garage--or so he says. Her family is led to believe she committed suicide.

Now, 25 years later, her son and daughter set out to prove she was killed by her husband, a successful real estate developer rumored to have strong ties to city officials and underworld crime. Many believe the investigation into Janny's death was a cover-up--starting with the coroner's office--and that her husband got away with murder.

As the siblings' investigation continues, they are led to believe their suspicions are true. Especially since evidence increases almost daily and points to only one killer--their father.

TCBR - 5 stars -- "In her new book author Sherrie Lueder recounts the life of Richard and Janyce Hansen, as told to her by two of Janyce's children and Court documents. "He Killed Our Janny" doesn't read so much like a book, per se, but more like written account of a friend's story. It was a pleasant change from the textbook-style of many of today's writers. When I was reading, I didn't want to stop; when I had to put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to reading. I wanted to know the ending. . . . Book voyeurs who are able to tackle tough subject matter will love "He Killed Our Janny" by Sherrie Lueder." --Kim Cantrell, TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEWS

Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite He Killed Our Janny: A Family's Search for the Truth by Sherrie Lueder is a true crime story that will take your breath away. Who really killed Denver, Colorado top model Janyce "Janny" Hansen? It was on September 21, 1984, when her husband returned to find her body in the car parked in their garage. She’d been murdered! Twenty-five years later, her children undertake the difficult, seemingly impossible challenge to prove that her husband might not be the innocent witness the courts and the media have portrayed him to be. In fact, the man who might have been a victim, given the circumstances, could actually be the perpetrator of the crime that has brought untold suffering to a family riddled with dark secrets. Sherrie Lueder’s retelling of this family’s history is masterful. Working with the victim’s children and court records, she unveils disturbing facts and truths about a case that could have been considered solved, and one of the stories that reveals the untold pain of abuse prevalent in American society today. The author’s voice comes across as sympathetic, filled with clarity, and at times poignancy. Besides being a wonderful storyteller, Sherrie Lueder has the gift of leading readers into the minds of her characters by exploring every aspect of their psychological mindset and the depths of their pain. The facts of this gruesome tale are arranged to allow readers a good understanding of the criminal’s mind, without losing anything regarding the unfolding of the sinister story. He Killed Our Janny: A Family's Search for the Truth by Sherrie Lueder is a story you will read with tears in your eyes and yet you will not be able to stop reading. It’s riveting!

Reviewed by Natasha Jackson for Readers' Favorite He Killed Our Janny is the story of the death of former model Janyce Hansen. Hansen and her husband Richard seemed to live the life of the Denver elite, complete with a sprawling suburban home, luxury cars and hedonistic costume parties. But on a September night in 1984, Janyce was found dead by her husband. At least that is the official story. Sherrie Lueder, with help from Janny’s children, tells a story filled with abuse, violence and decadence. What starts out as a story of a golden girl quickly turns to a story of a woman either scared or reluctant to address the alleged sexual abuse happening to her children. Richard appears to be the quintessential villain; mean-spirited, devoid of emotion and sexually deviant. As riveting as this story is, it does boggle the mind. Much of the information Sherrie Lueder gathered for He Killed Our Janny was gleaned from Janny’s children and court documents, so one has to wonder where all the information on Janny’s thoughts and knowledge came from. There is no doubt, if the Jacqueline and Jill report is true, that Richard was a despicable man. However, given all that was reported, it doesn’t strain the imagination to think Janyce committed suicide. One thing is clear and that is the death of Janyce Hansen was not sufficiently investigated. Given the life Richard and Janyce led, he could have killed her or she could have taken her own life. The story was interesting, although presented in a very dry narrative. Unfortunately, it doesn’t meet my true crime criteria with changed names and no evidence of their research, such as the police report that indicated it was an accidental death. This did whet my appetite for this story, but it did not sate it.
