"A triumph of the imagination. Rich, complex, impossible to put down."
Alice Hoffman
In the middle of the twenty-first century, life as we know it has changed for all time. Shira Shipman's marriage has broken up, and her young son has been taken from her by the corporation that runs her zone, so she has returned to Tikva, the Jewish free town where she grew up. I enjoyed the different themes of bioethics such as to what extend should we or should we not create or modify human life and who will it benefit? Do we truly want biotechnology to eliminate human suffering or use it for selfish reasons. Can we successfully create a living breathing human with technology? What are the implications of such an experiment? This novel also examines different women and their roles in an environmentally ravaged and violent society in which cyberwar is prevelant. A techie, scientist, and two assasins all examine their values in this novel. The male characters come and go and further fill in the story with their perspectives on technology(such as when Yod feels like he is genuinely human). Overall great novel.

I read this when it was first published and I still ponder the issues Piercy touchs on in the book. The dystopia she imagines in the future seems more and more credible as we continue to destroy our world. I also learned from the alternate story of the golum. I still recommend this book, and Marge Piercy in general, often to friends. I love Piercy's characters and I love that she is adept at several genres, fiction, historical fiction, science fiction and poetry.

This is yet another book proving Marge Piercy as a great novelist living in our times. Though all the characters or the subjects in this book may not be likeable, and may be too honestly portrayed for some, Ms. Piercy's skill with English and description cannot but impress the reader.

I'd recommend this to someone who has the time for careful analysis of their own conceptions of the human race and what it means to be who you are/where you are. The story is complex but not so much as to deter a person from reading it completely through. I enjoyed the different perspective and found it slightly hopeful--rather than 'depressing', as some others in my literary criticism class labeled it.

This novel will make you reevaluate what it means to be human. And to love.
