Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This book (likewise the rest of the "On the Job" series) is very thorough in its presentation of an occupation that may be of interest to its intended middle school audience. From the varied and colorful photographs throughout the text to the "highlight" boxes that define terms and phrases, this is a book that shares information about a day/week in the life of an early childhood teacher. The history of childcare as well as what kind of education is necessary are two important sections, but the majority of the text focuses on what it takes to be an early childhood educator on a daily basis, including decisions on everything from snacks to crafts suitable for youngsters. There is even a chapter on what middle or high school students can do to prepare for a future in early childhood education. The requisite Glossary is included as is a solid "Find out More" section that includes further suggestions for reading, as well as the FactHound site which finds the best sites for specific queries. This title and the series in general, will be useful for upper elementary and middle school teachers and librarians looking for a solid introductory text on various occupations. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
