Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Romance novelist Ladd (White Orchid) makes a successful venture into thriller territory with this first in a series featuring Missouri homicide detective Claire Morgan. Canton County, located on the "Lake Tahoe of the Ozarks," is a relaxing beat for the former Los Angeles cop until a soap opera star, vacationing at an exclusive resort for the rich and richer, is found at the bottom of the lake-naked, taped to a chair and sitting at a fully set dinner table. As she pursues the investigation to Louisiana and California and back, Morgan herself is pursued by her prime suspect: the resort's handsome, charming owner, Dr. Nicholas Black, whose romantic advances may hide a dangerous agenda. Though Ladd saddles Morgan with an all-purpose tragic past and occasional logic-deficient reasoning, she's a smart, strong character capable enough to avoid the woman-in-distress scenarios her genre colleagues so typically fall into. Despite a propensity for caustic rambling, her tough-girl voice keeps the story moving toward a satisfying denouement with plenty of suspense and surprises. (Mar.) I'm going to be perfectly honest in my review, I couldn't get halfway through the book. It's much too graphic for me. I enjoyed the sitting and the plot in the first 80 pages I was intrigued and honestly enjoyed the book.....but then BAM!! Way to much for my too even try to imagine. Thanks though.

Wow... I dont know how else to describe this book... chilling is one good word to use... also disturbing, twisted, scary, gory, and certainly NOT a childrens book. 14+ only So all and all i liked this book mostly cuz the end is so unexpected and twisted AND depressing. I know it probably sounds like a bad book but for those who love mysterys, have a strong stomach and few emotions this is a great read:)

Seriously i was hooked from the first page and stayed hooked til the end..so much mystery and suspense. I didnt figure anything out until i was well into the book. I dont usually read books like this but after this one i think ill start..i doubt any other book will compare to this one tho..somethings are morbid and very much described so i would recommend to older readers..GREAT READ!!!!

I have been a fan of thrillers for a long time, so I was excited to be introduced to this author on Free Friday. And I was not dissapointed! The sarcasm and attitude of protaganist Claire reminded me of Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum character , and the crime scene discriptions, and horror filled twists and turns were reminiscent of Patricia Cornwell and James Patterson novels. That being said everything was still quite fresh and unique. The action, gore, and twists definately kept me up at night with the light on, and made it hard to put this book down. Just enough romance w/o the graphic sex scenes of romance novels. My only complaint was that some plot lines got a bit unbelievable and I was also able to figure out the murderer half way through the book (but that could be b/c I have read alot of psychological thrillers & am getting good at spotting twists) I will be reading more from this author!

Worth reading. Not worth raving about. I AM SO GLAD Harriet Klausner no longer reviews books for B&N. I enjoyed this murder mystery. It is very violent and gory though. If you find this sort of writing disturbing, then this book is not for you. Some sexual situations, not explicit. Extreme child abuse of all types. For adult readers. A few events sickened me. AD

What a great thriller! Just when you think you have it figured out, the road takes a big turn and off you go! The last part of the book is breathtaking, edge of your seat, spine tingling and not at all what you were thinking. Highly recommend.

This is a good book. At first, I really didn't like the main char. She was just too sarcastic and hard. It felt forced. Late in the book the author reveals a traumatic event that makes the main char a little more believable. The other cops all share the same snarky attitude, so there was little diversity in personality. For most of the book I was confused about the main chars gender and I'd have to reread to find sections that indicated she was infact female. The predator gender confustion was on purpose and well done...but the main char was not. The book does keep you guessing though. I'm glad I didn't stop halfway now.

A SUPERB READ!    If you are a fan of thrillers and (non-supernatural) horror, don't miss this one.  Linda Ladd uses two parallel,  converging story lines that will keep even the most seasoned mystery readers guessing.  The action packed plot may, at times, be too graphic for some readers' tastes, but for those of us who think "thrillers" should be thrilling this book will be high on our favorite books list.

This book was written well, but the murders were so twisted and gruesome that I almost didn't finish the book. And the ending was SO farfetched! Linda Ladd can do better!

This book was neither a detective thriller or humorous. It tried to address both aspects and failed on both. Wouldn't read any more books by this author.

Got to be a bit too gruesome!

I loved reading about the Lake of the Ozarks region, but the novel became laughably grizzly about 8/10 of the way through. The main character was likeable, but it was all pretty formulaic. The serial killer, in parts, required a great deal of suspension of disbelief.

Head to Head is a story about a female police officer searching for a serial killer. Along the way, her own secrets get exposed and she learns things about herself and her family that she never knew. This book will pull you in from the first page. Enjoyed the two story lines. There is romance, mystery and a serial killer and it will keep you guessing until the end. A real page turner and one that was hard to put down.

What a wonderful surprise! I do not know exactly what it was that attracted me to this book but whatever it was I am so glad I read it. This is not a kind and gentle story. This is not a book for the faint of heart. This is a story that is full of very strong, well developed characters. The two main characters; Clair Morgan and Nicholas Black are wonderfully believable and I want them on my friends list. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

This book was hard to put down. It had me guessing who the killer was all the way through. I loved how the two stories came together, and I never saw the ending coming! I'd like to read another book by this author.

Thank you Barnes & Nobles for a great free book. If you like murder mysteries with a bit of romance then this is a book for you. It made me feel sorry for the villain at times, and kept me guessing who it was until the very end.

Head to Head keeps you riveted. Linda Ladd is very good with characterization and keeps me turning the pages. My only hope is she will not try to write a sequel. I cannot imagine what she could do to add to this fabulously frightening book. An excellent read!

Good read with enough turns to keep you reading. Excellent.

I really enjoyed this book!  A thoroughly creepy plot with enough surprises to keep you turning the pages. I will definittely look for more of Linda Ladd's books. Oh and for everyone being harsh to the people who get upset about this Harriet person: they have every right. There is no excuse to give away spoilers about a book. That is what the AUTHOR is for, NOT a reviewer! Obviously, she gets some sort of twisted sense of power from it. Really immature. Anyway, read the book, it is enjoyable!!
