Overview

Norway's a-ha took "Take on Me" to the number one spot on Billboard's Top 40 in 1985, thanks to the award-winning animated video that accompanied it. Still, a-ha contributed rather accordingly to the '80s pop sound, drenching their music with bouncy riffs and employing the keyboard as the foundation to their colorful formula. Headlines and Deadlines: The Hits of a-ha assembles all of their singles together, a definite one-stop for all of their music. Combining ballads and radiant '80s pop, this set includes their most fervent offering in "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," which hit number 20 in 1986 and originated from Hunting High and Low, the same album that included "Take on Me." After this album, the band's next couple of releases, East of the Sun and Memorial Beach, were total washouts, which makes this compilation all the more worthy. Other notables include remixed versions of "Hunting High and Low" and "You Are the One," as well as the theme song to The Living Daylights. Though comparisons to Duran Duran are difficult to avoid, a-ha did harbor some distinct qualities in their glossy sound, and quite a few of their songs still contain some redeeming factors, but are better appreciated when lined up in compilation form.

Perhaps the greatest band Norway has ever produced, a-ha made elegantly pristine pop during the 1980's that was seldom matched by their contemporaries. Rocketed to fame by the success of their first single, ''Take On Me'', the band quickly lost steam in the United States, but remained immensely popular internationally. They scored several more hits the world over before taking an extended hiatus from 1991 through 1999 to pursue solo projects. ''Headlines and Deadlines'' is a wonderfully produced compilation of a-ha's best work, with lead singer Morten Harket's dazzling vocal gymnastics taking center stage before an amazing backdrop of solid hooks and symphonic flourishes. From the aforementioned ''Take On Me'' to the wonderfully rendered ''Hunting High and Low'' and ''I've Been Losing You'', ''Headlines and Deadlines'' proves the musical expertise and durability of one of the 1980's most underrated groups. Personal Favorites: the edgy tension of ''I've Been Losing You'', the string-driven undercurrents in ''Hunting High and Low''.

Very few band compilations can boast the pedigree of work to be found on this 16 track package.H&D does not have a single dud on it. All the songs from the 1985-1989 period were major hits, gems include Take On Me, the edgy Crywolf and the best Bond theme of them all The Living Daylights.90's efforts Move To Memphis shows the trio moving more towards a MOR tack while I Called Your Name, with its soaring saxophone break is one of the most beautiful songs ever. On the evidence of this Morten, Mags and Paul should be one of the biggest acts in the world today. Check it out, it's worth it.
