Overview

Making a difficult topic easier to comprehend, Heads Up Psychology offers big ideas, simply explained, for teen readers.

Psychology is all around us — in the advertising we see, the politics we debate, and in the development of products we use every day. Using engaging graphics, Heads Up Psychology explores the big ideas from all areas of psychology including psychoanalysis, intelligence, and mental disorders.

With easy-to-understand coverage of all the approaches to psychology, and the ideas of more than 60 psychologists, from Asch to Milgram and Ramachandran to Zimbardo, this introduction to an often complicated subject is written with young-adult readers in mind, and is structured around the questions they often ask, like "How do I fit in?", "Who needs parents, anyway?", and "Why do I feel so angry all the time?"

In Heads Up Psychology, psychological theories are explained with the help of cleverly conceived graphic illustrations and diagrams to show how they relate to everyday life. Biography spreads give interesting insights into the lives and work of Freud, Pavlov, and more, while other psychologists and their big ideas are profiled in a comprehensive directory, and case study panels describe groundbreaking experiments in the field.

Supports the Common Core State Standards.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
05/19/2014
Filled with intriguing topics, this guide to human behavior highlights ideas central to developmental, biological, cognitive, and other branches of psychological study, while introducing preeminent psychologists and their contributions. The crucial infant-mother bond, how the brain makes decisions and processes memories, mental illness, and the science of emotions are among the topics covered. Attention-getting headers ("Why do good people do bad things?" introduces a discussion of the human capacity for evil) should hook curious readers, while the findings of psychological studies should deepen their understanding of this field. Infographics, sidebars, and photos both create an inviting visual layout and underscore the concepts discussed. Ages 13–17. (Apr.)

VOYA, August 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 3) - Kevin Beach
This attractive work provides a basic introduction to the expansive subject of psychology. The pages take the reader through the various branches of psychology and how each affects aspects of our lives. More than sixty psychologists and their research on the brain, mental disorders, and human behavior are touched on through pleasingly colorful graphics, simple-to-read text, and many sidebars. While the quality of the volume is typically high, as with most DK publications, the brevity of the topical entries limits the usefulness of the book. Young researchers may find an interesting topic for a paper or discover an interest in a certain aspect of psychology here, but there is not enough depth of coverage to use it as a resource. Its value lies more in browsing. Personal sections on fitting in and individuality may be of comfort to nonconformists. There are many interesting factoids and introductory information about important and fascinating research. A chronology might have been helpful. There are extremely brief bios of scientists in the supplemental portion of the book. The price is very reasonable. This is an appropriate title for youth collections that need an introductory title on the subject. Reviewer: Kevin Beach; Ages 11 to 15.
