Meet the Author

Lish McBride lives in Seattle and has never met a unicorn (alas!). She is the author of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer and its sequel, Necromancing the Stone.
Lish McBride grew up in the Pacific Northwest. It rains a lot there, but she likes it anyway. She spent three years away while she got her MFA in fiction from the University of New Orleans, where she managed to survive the hurricane. She enjoys reading, having geek-laden conversations about movies, comics, and zombies with her friends, and of course trying to wear pajamas as much as humanly possible. She lives happily in Seattle with her family, two cats, and one very put-upon Chihuahua. Her debut novel, Hold Me Closer, Necromancer was named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults and was a finalist for the YALSA William C. Morris Award.

I can only hope that this short story by Lish McBride may lead to a new series by the author of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. The main characters -- a weathered mercenary and her witty unicorn partner, both seeking justice in a world where magical creatures are forced into combat -- are engaging, and I'd absolutely follow them (and their new companions) on a novel length adventure. The short story certainly stands alone, with fun dialog and poignant character moments, and is well worth reading even if McBride never revisits the world. Hannah Christenson's cover image is stellar, as is all her work, and perfectly suits the tone of the story.
