Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program: Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound. Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top. Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.

That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around.

Editorial Reviews

Howard Kirshner
If everyone read Dr. Buchholz's book, headache would diminish as a problem all over the world.
Ronald J. Tusa
This book is clearly written, insightful and filled with useful tips for all individuals with migraine. A must read!
Roy A. Patchell
This is a very useful book that provides a fresh and logical approach to the management of headaches.
Publishers Weekly
Lifestyle Notes It's All in Your Head Although headaches are natural, they are not necessary, argues David Buchholz, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In his Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Headaches, Buchholz counsels severe headache sufferers to avoid quick fix painkillers, which can cause rebound headaches. For a more holistic approach, minimize triggers like caffeine, perfumes, certain foods and stress and, for hardcore cases, use preventative medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, calcium channel blockers and others. Buchholz also discusses common misdiagnoses of migraine symptoms and challenges the myth of tension and sinus headaches (these are usually migraines, he argues). (Aug.) The only cure!

I've suffered from headaches my whole life. After seeing three neurologists, I talked to someone who had been to the MAYO Clinic to get help for her headaches. The doctors there recommended this book to her and she is now almost completely headache free. I tried it, and I am now mostly headache free. I no longer have to take expensive medications, and I've lost 50 pounds! This is the only cure for headaches that I've run across. It talks in great detail about what a migraine is, what foods to eat and what to avoid, and also what medications to stay away from. I recommend this book to anyone on the street who is suffering from headaches, and offer to send them recipes to match the diet. I left my third neurologist to be in the care of one who now passes this book out to all of his patients. This is a wonderful book written by a doctor from Johns Hopkins Medical Center. He spent a large deal of his career working with Migraine patients. He explains in detail exactly what foods are triggers and tells you how to avoid them. If you think you know what foods are triggers and have trouble finding yours, you have not tried his method yet. It works! Patients who were 'incurable' were sent to him, and he was able to help them. Dr. Buchholz also explains why there are so many myths about headaches, and tells exactly what those myths are. If you are tired of being in pain, tired of being on medications and see no end in sight for you, this is the book to purchase. As Dr. Buchholz explains, you do not have to live with your headaches!

    Life Changing

I suffered from headaches almost every day for years. I took lots of Excedrin and Imitrex, and tried all kinds of other drugs my doctor recommended. I even went to a headache clinic and got worked up. I would have sworn there were no dietary links to my headaches, because I thought I was paying attention to all the possible causes and couldn't find a trigger. Then a physician recommended this book to me. I read it overnight and started the program the next day. I have been following Dr. Buchholz's advice for three years now, and it has changed my life. I know what causes my headaches and I avoid the triggers. It feels like a miracle, and I love not having headaches anymore! The other side benefit is that I lost 20 pounds. I now buy this book as a gift for any friends or family who complain to me about their headaches. Thank you, Dr. Buchholz!!!

This book gave us our daughter back!!

Dr. Buchholz's has given us our daughter back, through his innovative book Heal Your Headache!!! She has suffered for many years with daily Migraine, and has tried many doctors and medicines with little or no improvement. She finally had to withdraw from college in February and move back home, unable to function due to Migraines. Then we found this book!!!Briefly, Dr. Buchholz's 3-step program is :1)Discontine/then limit Imitrex and other pain medications to prevent rebound headaches, 2)Remove all common Migraine food triggers from the diet, then reintroduce to identify your personel triggers 3)If needed, add a threshhold-raising preventative medication. The book includes an explanation of the Migraine mechanism, and how each step combines to prevent/control headaches. Since following Dr. Buchholz's instructions, she has been able to happily work part time all summer, and is registered to return to our local college next month! Now, she laughs with friends, reads and goes to movies, (BIG Harry Potter fan!!!),is beginning to teach three-year-olds at church, ¿in other words...She is LIVING LIFE again!!! There are no words to adequately express our gratitude to Dr. Buchholz's for this profound book.

    Exactly what I needed!

After fifty years of migraines, I thought I knew just about everything I needed to know about migraines. And then a migraine-burdened friend whose husband is a physician told me about this book. What an eye opener! Suddenly all those stiff necks, sinus problems, dizzy spells and extremely upset stomach problems became part of a pattern of migraines. But because of this book, I now have better methods to cope with the problems and none too soon. As I am reaching Medicare age, I'm finding that my trusty over-the-counter migraine meds are now giving me terrible side effects that are as bad as the migraines. Learning how to cope better with the problem using non-medical methods has been extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book!

    Great read for Migraine Sufferers

I bought this book because I was suffering from extremely excruciating constant migraines. This book really educated me on the migraine, why we get them and how to live with them. The most important aspect of this book for me was the part on medication. The medication I was originally prescribed made me incredibly ill.....after reading the book I understood why. I'm now on the correct medicine for my condition and rarely suffer a migraine. Very educational and informative. I recommend this for anyone suffering with migraine.

Heal Your Headache The 1-2-3 Program

This is absolutely the best book I've ever read about headaches. After suffering with chronic, debilitating migraines for over 40 years, I thought I had read and heard everything there was to know about migraine headaches. Not true. I had no idea my prescription medication is actually a trigger for rebound headaches. I learned important information on migraine myths and misdiagnoses that helped me understand why exercise triggers migraine for me. I also learned that my worst enemy is caffeine.

This book is divided into four sections that explain everything you need to know about headaches, in easy to read language, complete with simple diagrams.

Truly heal or reduce migraine pain

This book provides opportunity to make a difference in your life. It can actually provide a way to clinically reduce the level of pain and the frequency of pain. However, it is not a one day cure and requires a dedicated decision on your part to make hard choices and to stay with them. If you do the work prescribed by the author, you will make progress in your battle against migraine. This is not a magic pill, but a major change in how you take care of yourself.

Migraine Free and back to life

My fourteen year old son was so devastated by migraines he had missed so much school he was on the verge of having to repeat his grade. He was having virtually back to back migraines, unable to get out of bed more days than not. He had to give up sports, guitar, and was often too sick to even talk on the phone. When my son first became ill I took the alternative route. We tried acupuncture, homeopathy, and nutritional supplements. I finally gave in and tried the hard core drugs prescribed by my son's neurologist. A drawer full of drugs later, nothing was working. The neurologist told me the best we could expect was that if my son was lucky he might outgrown the migraines, but most likely he would just have to learn to live with it. I promised my son I would not give up looking for a cure. I read late into the night most nights, following every thread to see if it might lead me to a cure. Then I was reading a blog online and about the 200th entry mentioned a migraine diet. I began to investigate and found Dr. Buchholz book. The diet was daunting, but I was desperate. I filled bags and bags of foods that I took out of my kitchen. I followed the diet exactly. My son stopped having migraines! Since being on the diet he has never had another migraine. After 2 months of strict adherence we slowly began to reincorporate foods back into his diet. He has never missed another day of school due to headache. He is back playing sports and brought home an excellent report card. Give this diet a chance. Read the whole book. Follow the instructions exactly. I wish you all good luck and health.

    This book changed my life

An eye-opener for anyone who suffers from headaches and is dependent on medications. After reading the book, I one day decided to go cold turkey and stopped taking the triptan meds as advised in the book. I suffered for 3 days with bad headaches but after that and I have not had a headache since. It was informative to read other people's headache stories. You don't need to be a neurologist to understand this book.

    A reviewer

Dr. David Buchholz: I am sure you receive many emails such as this where you are given praises for 'saving my life.' Please add this email to your long list. I read your book and toyed with the idea of trying the restrictions you listed but kept putting it off thinking there was no way I could face my day without caffeine. I am a nurse, so you know how we are addicted! The decision was made for me when I contracted a nasty virus and was really sick and unable to eat or drink for 3 days. I decided to continue on with your diet limitations once I recuperated since my system had been so effectively flushed. This occurred in March 2006 and I adhered to your complete recommendations for the full 3 months. I then started gradually adding items. The things that I have never reintroduced are: caffeine, soda, red wine and anything with artificial sweeteners. I went for months without any headache and now get one maybe once every 6 weeks or so, mostly when extremely tired or suffering from jet lag. I was up to 9 migraines a month and relied on imitrex to get me through the headache. My doctor even had me on verapamil and elavil prophalactically. I stopped these medications within a month of being headache free. So my thanks to you! I feel I owe you a lot and am forever grateful for your powerful book. It has changed my life! Sincerely, Janis Sloane P.S. Get yourself an early holiday gift and be headache free in the new year! It is amazing how wonderful it is to not wake up wondering if and when the debilitating migraine will occur.

    Life Changing Book, Outstanding Doctor

My mother bought me this book after I had a migraine for 11 days. Yes, 11 days straight. I tried every Rx imagineable - Zomig, Vicodin, Percocet, Fioricet, etc. I tried everything and nothing helped the pain or even touched it! I could not go to work or participate in normal activities. I was depressed and crying everyday. I had migraines for 10 yrs and had relied on Zomig and Imitrex. If I even came close to running out of those drugs, I would panic and beg my dr for more. Then I read Heal Your Headache and realized that I was rebounding and gobbling dietary triggers by the handful. As soon as I got the book, I breathed a sigh of relief, just knowing there was hope. I immediately quit drinking coffee and taking birth control pills. Within 1-2 days my headache started waning. It's only been a week but I already feel 90% better!!! I have removed all the dietary triggers listed from my diet as well. This book is amazing. I recommend it to all who suffer from headaches. I believe it will change my life. Thank you so much Dr. Buchholz!! I cannot express enough gratitude.

If you get migraines, you must check out this book!

I have suffered with migraines for almost 20 years and thought there was no choice but to just live with them after I had to give up triptan drugs because of rebound headaches. I would lose three days at a time and be in excruciating pain and vomit. Then someone recommended this book and it has made a world of difference for me. By following the diet advice in the book, I have reduced the number of headaches and more importantly, the severity of them dramatically. I am still working on supplemental medication for when I do get them but I would hate to think where I would be without the help of Dr. Buchholz' book. If you get migraines, you must check out this book. It may seem like a lot to take on but if you suffer like I did, it is worth giving up certain foods and caffeine to get your life back.

    Real Migraine Relief

Heal Your Headache is an easy to read guide to curing migraine headaches. I never would have believed that anything but a dark room, painkillers and sleep, would make the pain go away, but this book has a solution that works. It defines the problem and outlines three steps to relief. I recommend reading it and following the advice.

This book by Dr. Buchholz is a MUST-read for migraine sufferers and their family and friends. There is a wide range of manifestations of migraines which vary with time, patient's condition, and many other factors. This is why migraines are so confusing to numerous patients and doctors, and this is why they are often so difficult to diagnose. Headache is not the only symptom of migraines. Non-headache symptoms such as visual, vestibular, and somatosensory symptoms are not uncommon, and are often misdiagnosed and therefore mistreated. There are many cases in which the patient apparently suffers migraines, yet the doctor fails to recognize them because the symptoms are 'atypical.' Even when a migraine diagnosis is made, the doctor often goes for quick fixes and in the long run exacerbates patient¿s suffering. In his book, Dr. Buchholz explains in detail the mechanism of migraines¿triggers and threshold¿and why most conventional wisdom about migraines is actually counterproductive. His 3-step approach makes immense sense, and what's most important is that it actually works! It guides you step-by-step how to manage your migraines and live a full and meaningful life. Do you know why I know about all this? Because my daughter has actually tried it and it is working. She had suffered from migraine-related dizziness for more than 10 years. During this time period, she saw numerous doctors. Different doctors gave different diagnoses. Some doctors even gave weird 'expressions.' She had taken many different medicines and none worked some actually made situations much worse. We are very thankful that we were introduced to Dr. Buchholz and his wonderful book. My daughter is getting better and better at managing her migraines. If you are a migraine sufferer or if you think migraines may be the culprit of your medical problems, you owe yourself a chance to try it. It works.

    Numerous Symptoms Cured

I highly recommend this book which has really helped me. I was not even aware that my symptoms were caused by the migraine mechanism. I had been previously diagnosed with Meniere's Disease (dizziness, ear pressure, occasional acute attacks), with allergies, which I don't have (sinus pain, fever, discharge), with reaction to dry air (nosebleeds), ??? (fatigue), arthritis (neck stiffness) .... By following Dr. Buchholz's advice -- chiefly the elimination diet -- I have been able to significantly reduce these symptoms and look forward to complete relief. I feel better than I have in ages!

Every Headache Sufferer Should Read This Book!

This book has changed my life...it's that simple and that profound. I've always had headaches - they were just a part of my life. But when I began having severe vertigo attacks something had to be done. I was diagnosed as having vestibular (inner ear) migraines at Johns Hopkins and told to get this book and read it from cover to cover. And so began a journey of recovery by following the guidelines provided in this book. The change in diet is critical to the success of the program. It seemed a bit overwhelming at first, but now it's easy and has brought about such wonders (and I was a serious 'chocoholic'). Most of the medications I was previously taking have also been changed in accordance wilth Dr. Buchholz's research. The vertigo is gone and I am almost headache-free. I am in control of my life - thanks to Heal Your Headache and Dr. David Buchholz.
