Adult acne affects about 40 percent of Americans to some degree, and many sufferers do not see improvement with over-the-counter products. Fried, a board-certified dermatologist and former clinical psychologist, has authored a healing road map that, unlike many current popular acne guides for adult men and women-e.g., Terry J. Dubrow and Brenda Adderly's The Acne Cure and Nicholas Perricone's The Acne Prescription-emphasizes a holistic and personalized approach to causes and therapies. His logically arranged and highly readable book begins with a clear explanation of acne causes, effects, and triggers. The cited prescriptions, skin care products, lasers, and abrasion therapies are up-to-date, inclusive, and scientifically grounded. Discussion of controversial treatments such as diet therapy is accompanied by current biomedical research. About two-thirds of the book is devoted to the psychological side of acne (e.g., coping skills for stress, anxiety, and depression). Advice on how to live well with acne and a short list of resources and references round out this approachable and compassionately written guide. Recommended for public and consumer health libraries.-Janice Flahiff, Medical Univ. Lib. of Ohio, Toledo Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
